–Gubo, Canto IV: The Unchanging

Gubo (Hangul: 구보, Gubo) is a recurring character that first appeared as a minor antagonist in the webcomic, Leviathan, in Book7 - Ingress.

He was a newcoming member of Hermann's new League of Nine — a subdivision within N Corp. — who infiltrated the Ring's auction to retrieve fellow member, Aseah.

Gubo is an overarching antagonist introduced in Canto I: The Outcast of Limbus Company. He is currently in opposition with Limbus Company to retrieve the Golden Boughs within the ruined Lobotomy Corporation facilities.

Appearance

Gubo is stern-looking man with short black hair and dark red eyes. He wears round glasses, at times with red-tinted lenses. He appears in the N Corp. uniform of Hermann's team, consisting of a dark blue long coat with red plaid lapels; his company ID is attached to his left lapel. Underneath the company uniform, he wears a grey waistcoat over a white-collered dress shirt with a red tie, and a pair of grey pants with shoes to match.

In combat, Gubo wields a curved karambit knife.

Personality

Gubo is a very professional man, as seen in Leviathan; though he was not interested in any of the art put on the Ring's auction and refused to bow his head, he wore the face veil and respected the gallery’s traditions. This however was a more pragmatic choice in order to avoid potential conflict, wanting to gain access to the Ring's corridor through the path of least resistance without unnecessary conflict.

At the core, Gubo is a cold-blooded man who will do whatever is takes to achieve his goals and keep his unflappable demeanor no matter the circumstance. When adapting to difficult circumstances, the scientist will still chat nonchalantly with even those who threaten his own life.

Vergilius surmises his calm demeanor and penchant to make jokes to be a facade, picking up Gubo’s stress and displeasure through his unfazed expressions — a product of his calculating nature where he postpones his emotions and actions based on the results.

In his debut in Limbus Company during Canto I: The Outcast, Gubo reciprocates his former collegue's question of how only a few remain with him as Yi Sang laments Gubo's path.

Story

Leviathan

Gubo participated as a bidder to the Ring Finger’s auction to retrieve fellow League of Nine Littérateurs researcher, Aseah, who was kidnapped by the Syndicate. Maestro Jumsoon picks up on his intentions, but orders his men to simply observe him, deeming Gubo to not be a threat yet.

Determined to gain access to the Ring’s corridor by becoming the highest bidder to their auction, Gubo offered an absurd 10 billion Ahn when betting on Jumsoon’s treasured ‘Red Gaze’. However, Vergilius snubbed Gubo’s bid by personally offering Jumsoon to complete the unfinished painting. Despite Gubo’s protests, Jumsoon declares Vergilius’ bid successful and grants him and Garnet access to the Ring’s corridor.

Gubo covered in blood.

His initial plan defunct, Gubo infiltrates the corridor anyway and appeared to have killed the Ring members in his way along with the other guests in the gallery, losing all of his men in the charge. Hiding behind a hall in the corridor, Vergilius notices Gubo’s presence and is forced to reveal himself wearing his coat stained with blood. Gubo went with the claim that he had bathed himself in the blood of the other gallery auctioneers and Ring Fingers he killed in order to lower Vergilius’ guard by feigning injury. But according to Vergilius’ observations, Gubo appeared to have actually sacrificed the men that accompanied him as a merciless price to gain access to the Ring’s corridor.

He attempts to convince Vergilius to accompany him in exchange for the price he wants. The Red Gaze, wise to Gubo's intentions, presents Gubo the ultimatum to provide all the information he has on the Ring’s refraction technology in exchange for Aseah’s rescue. Gubo, unwilling to pay that high price and noting that Virgilius was unarmed, attacks him with his karambit knife, but is still no match for the Colored Fixer. Bested in both strength and intel with his life on the line, Gubo reluctantly accepts Vergilus’ terms. The two then make their way to the end of the corridor and into the Ring’s laboratory, encountering the red cocoon Garnet became after being refracted by the glass window.

What's left of Garnet...

Gubo then regrouped with Aseah as Vergilius was busy with dispatching the Peccatulum created from the Ring’s experiments. After Aseah complied with Jumsoon’s order of subjecting both he and Vergilius to the refraction technology, the N Corp. scientists observed the two’s fight. When Vergilius awakened to his E.G.O and the Abnormality, Schadenfreude, had burst from Jumsoon’s body, killing him, Gubo and Aseah were satisfied with the results of the glass window and left through a corridor opened by the latter.

Limbus Company

Canto I: The Outcast

Jia Huan, Hermann, and Gubo cornering the Sinners.

Gubo makes his debut in Limbus Company at the end of Canto I, appearing with fellow Director Hermann and Jia Huan when confronting the Sinners in Branch D-02. After dispatching the Golden Apple and retrieving the Golden Bough from Yuri’s head, Yi Sang laments his former collegue’s choices as Gubo confirms to him that “only a few remain now”. The N Corp. team confiscates the Golden Bough from the Sinners as Jia Huan uses his abilities to knock all of them unconscious with a clap of his hands.

Canto IV: The Unchanging

It is revealed that Gubo was part of the original League of Nine, although it was more as if he were a mere bystander. He didn't get involved much in its affairs until the League finally met its demise; an opportunity he used to get a fragile Yi Sang and lead him to the so-called "White Room", claiming that he should not give up on his life and be taken away by T Corp. There, he was supervised by both him and Director Herrman, in an attempt to get him to assist them with the Mirror Technology he had created.

Gubo, at that time, was giving Yi Sang pills that forced him to be oblivious to his surroundings, and also made him incredibly sleepy. He tried persistently to have him abide by Hermann's will, attempting to convince him that this new League that they are forming will be better than the previous one. Once Yi Sang realized the opportunity to escape had long been there, Gubo did nothing to stop him. However, he instead asked him if that was his final decision, claiming that his life from now on would be hopeless, with Yi Sang having nowhere to go. He gave him a notice saying that he will be there at midnight if Yi Sang finally decides against it, but no more effort is shown into preventing him from leaving.

Trivia

  • Gubo takes his name from the pen name of author Park Taewon. Kubo, alternately romanized as Gubo, was, together with Yi Sang, a member of the literary group, "The Circle of Nine", or the Guinhoe, which the League of Nine is directly based on.
    • Park Taewon's novel, A Day in the Life of Kubo the Novelist (Hangul: 소설가 구보씨의 일일, Hanja: 小說家 仇甫氏의 一日) was illustrated by fellow poet Kim Hae-Gyeong, whom Yi Sang is named after, under his alias Ha Yung.
  • Gubo's knife is a karambit, a curved knife originating from West Sumatra in Indonesia. According to local folklore, the shape of the knife was inspired by the claws of a tiger.
    • This draws similarities with Yi Sang's knife, a saingeom, which according to Korean folklore was forged during the Year, Month, Day, and Hour of the Tiger.
