Meursault (Hangul: 뫼르소, Moereuso) is designated Sinner #5 of Limbus Company's LCB department.

Meursault is a reserved and complacent man with a desire to be clearly communicated with. He was previously affiliated with N Corp., having tried and failed to form an opinion on their ideals prior to joining Limbus Company.

He will be the focus character of the currently unannounced Canto X.

Appearance

Meursault is a tall, well-built man with slicked-back black hair and small green eyes. He possesses a sharp face with a thick neck and wide eyebrows. He wears the Limbus Company vest, but opts not to overlay it the standard company coat. Underneath his vest is the typical white collared shirt and red tie. His ID hangs from his right breast. Meursault's belt is notably different from the other sinners', and rather than being fitted with several silver frames, has one large, golden buckle in the middle.

In battle, Meursault wields two elbow-length gauntlets in battle; the lower portion of the right gauntlet has the word "SOLEIL" emblazoned on it.

Personality

Meursault is a very prompt man, only doing what he is told. He speaks bluntly and concisely, never mincing his words.

He is noticeably emotionally distant, never emoting and never involving himself in anything unless ordered to. He has a heightened awareness of the world around him, often sensing details others do not, but has trouble comprehending when his observations will be helpful to others. This leads to situations wherein he either shares too much, such as reciting irrelevant emoticons in Shrenne's email, or shares too little, such as when he only reveals after prompting by Dante that he noticed Sinclair was having an anxiety attack due to the memories brought by returning to Calw, or when he noticed Aeng-du had dragged Kim away to kill him.

After almost a year of traveling with the LCB, he has begun to share his thoughts and take initiative without needing to be ordered to do so, but due to his manner of speech, tends to be cut off by others jumping to conclusions before he has finished speaking. Many of his judgements are extremely objective and utilitarian, following only the will of the manager, but some do take into consideration the emotions of others, such as when he suggests that to protect Heathcliff from further harm, they must stop the lightning strikes, even if it costs them the Golden Bough. He also uses his E.G.O. to bind the Erlking in place without any prompting from anyone. By Intervallo IV: Murder on the WARP Express, Heathcliff and Don Quixote have started treating him as a walking encyclopedia, and he obliges without issue, sharing whatever information others ask for.

Background

Meursault was previously employed by N Corp. for an unknown length of time. While working for the Wing, he would think about his own personal opinions on humanity and if it aligned with N Corp's ideals of believing that pain is necessary to be considered human, but he never came to a conclusion. In the past, Meursault was more open to elaborating on his thoughts without being prompted to do so, but after he found that people were often unable to accept what he had to say he stopped sharing such information with others. He used to wander about to discover the joys of life, and often visited clubs during this time. Meursault has mentioned that he has seen multiple cases of Distortion Phenomenon, but did not confirm if this was related to his time at N Corp.

As a child, Meursault was scolded by his mother in a way he describes as similar to the way that Outis reprimands Don Quixote and Heathcliff in Intervallo III: Miracle in District 20.

Trivia

  • Meursault's character icon depicts the rays of the sun in the sky, with thick chains dividing it. It is notably confined to a rectangular space, unlike the other sinners' icons.
  • Meursault is represented by the 🌇 emoji[2].
    • However, in non-official content it is quite common to find him represented by the ⛓ emoji, referencing his base E.G.O, Chains of Others.
  • Meursault's particulars are listed as "refuses to cast any moral judgement".
  • Meursault is based on the protagonist of the same name from the novella The Stranger by French author, philosopher, and political activist Albert Camus.
    • In The Stranger, Meursault is on first appearance an amoral and overly-rational man, completely detached from all understanding of typical societal standards, such as him not showing obvious engagement for sentimental rituals during his mother's funeral, and passing absolutely no judgement towards the behavior of his unsavory neighbors, instead focusing on the physical sensations he feels in his life. After he shoots and kills an unnamed Arab man on the beach, his murder trial focuses less on the actual crime committed and more on his perceived soullessness, as someone who did not cry at his mother's funeral.
    • The "SOLEIL" written on Meursault's gauntlet, meaning "Sun" in English, represents the recurring motif of the heat of the sun in The Stranger, which causes Meursault discomfort during his mother's funeral, clouds his judgement on the beach when he kills the unnamed Arab, causes him further discomfort during his trial, and is used as his only defense for why he committed a murder- a defense that Meursault himself recognizes as sounding ridiculous.
  • Meursault's introduction quote references the famous opening line of The Stranger, which introduces the theme of Meursault's indifference to the life around him.
    • Out of all the Sinners, this is the only one which deviates from its original source: the original quote, instead reads, "today, mother died. Or maybe it was yesterday."
  • Like all of the Sinners, Meursault voiced a "Document Excerpt" Youtube short.
  • Meursault occasionally intersperses his speech with French.
  • Meursault is a proficient cook, as shown during the Hell's Chicken event.
  • Meursault's voice actor, Kwon Sung-hyuk, previously voiced Mang-chi, McCullin, Gyeong-mi, Alloc, and Pluto from Library of Ruina.
