We received our first request. The excitement was short-lived as we watched chaos unfold in the middle of K Corp.'s Nest. Time is winded as usual, and a pair of downcast eyes catch my attention.

The Unchanging is the fourth Canto in Limbus Company, and Yi Sang's focus chapter. It was released on Season 2: Reminiscence and takes place between Intervallo I: Hell's Chicken and Intervallo II: S.E.A..

This Canto released in three parts, being the first to do so, with Part 1 releasing on June 1st, 2023 and Parts 2 and 3 releasing in the following two weeks.

Summary

The LCB discover an Abnormality suddenly rampaging through District 11 and manage to suppress it. Following this, they reach the K Corp. building and meet its Branch Manager Dongrang, who is also an acquaintance of Yi Sang. He promises to give the Golden Bough to the Sinners as per their "contract". However, the building is suddenly attacked by terrorists known as the "Technology Liberation Alliance", who hijack the building and the machines within to force the K Corp guards in killing the LCB. The Sinners are forced to deal with the Bots sent by the Alliance, L Corp. E.G.O. users, and even a Workshop that was paid by a mole to act as backup for the Alliance, with said mole suddenly being assassinated by a Shi Association member. All the while, the Sinners learn more about both K Corp.'s dark side and Dongrang's callousness.

Following Shrenne's death, the leader of the Technology Liberation Alliance's group, Dongbaek, another old friend of Yi Sang's, reveals herself to have the Golden Bough, and stabs him through the heart before leaving. After Dante saves Yi Sang, the Sinner admits his most distressing moment was being brought back to life. Continuing forward, the Sinners confront Dongbaek at the top of the building, where she reveals her intent to destroy the source of K Corp.'s healing ampules, stating their danger. Dongrang's assistant Samjo tries to prove their safety, only to die when he dives in a vat full of it. After Dongbaek loses to the Sinners in combat, Dongrang reveals the source of the ampules; a massive eye that cries when witnessing cruelty happen, such as the massacre of Calw and the aforementioned rampage of the Abnormality, which escaped from the Alliance's control. As Dongrang berates Dongbaek's failings, she begins to distort, only to instead gain a personal E.G.O and keeps fighting the Sinners. She loses again, and Dongrang kills her with the Golden Bough, claiming that it is an act of compassion as their former compatriot Gubo has been assisting N Corp. reassemble the League of Nine and killing any old members that don't join, but it is clear he has other motivations for ending Dongbaek's life. As she turns into petals in front of Yi Sang, the death is recorded and played for the Tearful Thing.

Within Story Dungeon

The Bough however resonates with Yi Sang, causing the building to become distorted, and all the K Corp. Security and Technology Liberation Alliance members are reanimated without their consciousness. Fighting their way past them, they reach a gate that leads into a dungeon based on Yi Sang's memories of the League of Nine, and the Sinners are forced to act out the other members to progress. During the play, it is revealed that Yi Sang had created a "mirror" that could peer into other worlds, which would become the base of the LCB Identity system, and that Dongrang had sold out the rest of the League to T Corp., and received secure employment with K Corp. in return. The Sinners also learn the nature of K Corp.'s Singularity: the Tearful Thing was once a human boy who explored the Outskirts together with Stephanette, a girl who would go on to become K Corp.'s Chief Executive. The boy, after expressing his wish of being able to help people, was turned into the Tearful Thing, and started being used as a Singularity.

In the aftermath of the fall of the League, Yi Sang, with nowhere else to go, and believing he could never "fly" again, went with Gubo to N Corp., where he was regularly drugged and used to help advance N Corp's works. Eventually, Yi Sang managed to work the courage to escape.

After reaching the bottom of the dungeon, Dongrang, who had been struggling with living under the shadow of the League even after its downfall, starts distorting, but then manages to reverse the process and gain a personal E.G.O, Farmwatch by casting away such thoughts and deciding to kill Yi Sang so his copy of the "mirror" can be the only one left standing. Dongrang nearly wins, but Yi Sang gains helps from not only Hong Lu and Dante, but Dongbaek and Sang Yi's words of encouragement. This allows him to gather the courage to fight back, killing Dongrang.

With Dongrang's death, the contract signed with K Corp. becomes null, and the current K Corp. Chief Executive Alfonso requests for the LCB's memories of the Singularity erased as the condition for giving them the Golden Bough. Despite the Sinners', particularly Ryōshū's, protests, they go forth with the procedure. Only Dante manages to walk away with the memories intact, apparently being immune to the process, although they do not share this fact with the others. As they return to the bus, they question Yi Sang on his wishes, asking where it was that he wished to fly to. Yi Sang replies that he would have been satisfied with the feelings it would give, and that currently he still has to reflect on what he truly wishes for himself. However, he is resolute to keep on living and facing what the future has in store for him.

Afterwards, during a victory party over the third Bough successfully retrieved, Dante meets Demian again, who explains why he believes the Mirror to be a cruel piece of technology, then asks Dante to draw a sheep for him as they had once promised to, before leaving. The last scene has Dante's clock head begin moving towards midnight.
