–Stubb, Canto V: The Evil Defining |
Stubb (Hangul: 스텁, Seuteop) was the Second Mate of the The Pequod and is a minor character in Canto V: The Evil Defining.
Appearance
Stubb appears with a buzz cut, with the sides shaved down. His face is stern with a heavy brown and large nose, and he is seen with a dark pipe in his mouth. He wears a green large coat adorned with several gold buttons, with a white dress shirt and tie beneath. He wears dark dress pants and boots.
Personality
Stubb is scarcely seen, yet he appears to be stern and abrasive. Despite this, he went out of his way to attempt to save Pip, causing him to be bit and later become a Mermaid. Even still, he followed Ahab blindly even up until his demise.
Story
Stubb is shown briefly aboard the Pequod through the Golden Bough's resonance, scolding the crew during their voyages. Over time he developed a close relationship with the crew, and especially Pip, going as far as defending the younger crew member during an encounter with a Whale, leading to Stubb being bit and beginning a slow transformation into a Mermaid. Ahab sent off Stubb to be incarcerated in the ship to be used as a compass to the Pallid Whale, the target of the crew's hunt.
He would be kept in the ship, being managed by whomever would end up unlucky enough to feed the Mermaid.

Trivia
- Stubb shares his namesake with the eponymous character of Herman Melville's Moby-Dick, the second mate of the Pequod. In the novel, Stubb is a man with a long history of sailing, making him always carefree and relaxed in the face of danger, a fact that often puts him at odds with his Captain.
- In Moby-Dick, Ishmael mentions that Stubb is never seen without a pipe, claiming that "You would almost as soon have expected him to turn out of his bunk without his nose as without his pipe," a trait that is referenced in Stubb's design in Limbus Company.
