–Starbuck, Canto V: The Evil Defining |
Starbuck (Hangul: 스타벅, Seutabeok) was the First Mate of The Pequod and a supporting character in Canto V: The Evil Defining.
The second in command of Captain Ahab, he became her devoted follower in order to survive — even when the entire crew was devoured by the Pallid Whale.
Appearance
Starbuck appears as a burly man with dark skin and long, black, hair that messily reaches his chin. He has a noticeable scar across his nose, as well as dark stubble on his chin and thick eyebrows. He wears a green button-up shirt with several tears and stitches and rolled up to reveal his forearms, with dark suspenders connecting to his large, tan, wading pants. He wears large, dark, rubber boots over his feet. He is also shown to carry a massive, barbed, harpoon.
In the past during his time on the Pequod, he wore his hair up in a pompadour. In Pequod Town, he is affected by the Pallid Whale's pallidifaction, and has trouble speaking.
Personality
Starbuck is generally a cheery man, immediately offering the Sinners a hand during their arrival in the Pallid Whale. Despite his kind nature, he is greatly devoted to Ahab as her first mate, so much so that he defended her immediately after Ishmael's aggressive nature being directed towards his captain. He seemingly struggles to come to terms with the deaths of his crewmates, something highlighted by The Pequod First Mate Yi Sang Identity.
Story
Prior to Limbus Company
Prior to the events of Canto V, Starbuck was a devoted member of the Pequod, focused on the hunt of the Pallid Whale. He was close to the crew, and is showcased to be greatly caring and honest to the crew, between playfully teasing Pip as well as comforting Ishmael before the hunt of the Pallid Whale was assumed to be concluded. Like the rest of the crew, he looked up to Ahab as a great leader during this time, even though he also appealed to the others that disagreed with the captain.
Canto V: The Evil Defining
He is first met in the flesh when the Sinners arrive inside the Pallid Whale. Soon after, a great amount of acid began to flood the portions where the Sinners were, before Starbuck and members of Pequod Town would arrive to save the Sinners, throwing a rope down to them. As the Sinners closely follow, they arrive to the town led by Starbuck, before Ishmael makes an attempt at Ahab's life, spurring the members of the town to fight back. Starbuck makes it clear, following this confrontation, that they will not allow their captain to be attacked again. From here, Starbuck would accompany Ahab's crew as they travel to kill the Pallid Whale's heart, He would stand by, and possibly even participate, during the slaughtering of many of the villagers. Once arrived at the heart, Starbuck would combat the Sinners side-by-side with Queequeg and Ahab, only to later be consumed by Ahab's E.G.O, Gasharpoon. He would be turned into fuel and expended in the battle, perishing.

Trivia
- Starbuck shares his namesake with the character of Herman Melville's Moby-Dick, sharing his role as first mate, as well as outwardly showing want to return home.
- In chapter 123 of the novel, Starbuck goes down to Ahab's cabin to speak to him, but stops upon seeing a loaded musket, and debates taking it and shooting the Captain, to put an end to the madness of the hunt for Moby-Dick and finally end the voyage, although in the end, he thinks best of it. The scene is referenced in Limbus Company by the scene in which Ishmael walks into Ahab's cabin, to find her sleeping with her eyes open, entranced in the thought of killing the Pallid Whale.
