Refraction Railway

Refraction Railway is a secondary game mode in which the player must clear a series of high difficulty combat challenges in return for rare and limited rewards.

Each Season introduces a new Line and features mobs first encountered during that Season's respective Canto as well as new enemies.

Overview

Like Story Dungerons, the player will assemble a team that cannot be changed or altered. However, there will be no dungeon events or E.G.O Gifts. Any E.G.O Resources from a cleared stage will be retained for the proceeding battles.

If the stage is lost, the Line will revert back to the previous stage, and the Sinners' Health and Sanity status and amount of obtained E.G.O Resources at that stage will be reset correspondingly. The player may return to the last stage willingly if needed, but the Sinners' state and amount of E.G.O Resources will revert as well.

Each Line has varying lengths, mechanics, and gimmicks, requiring the player to think of a strategy for the Sinners to stay alive and clear the entire Line in the fewest number of turns.

Every stage pits you against a wave of enemies and abnormalities at a fixed difficulty, with the enemies and difficulty changing each stage. All stages utilizes Sin Resistances--even if the enemy is a human--and the fights act as Focused Encounters.

Reward

Clearing stages for the first time leaves rewards in the "Lost and Found" section, which can be accessed using Enkephalin Modules. The Lost and Found section will remain unlocked and consecutive rewards can be claimed for free from that Line until it is closed.

The game mode takes into account how many turns the player took to clear a stage, and that value is tallied across all the stages. At the end of the last stage, the expedition record will highlight the following:

  • Expedition date
  • Sinner, Identities and E.G.O brought to the railway expedition
  • Total Clear Turns taken in all stages
  • Damage statistics on each stage

The logs are ranked based on the lowest number of turns taken to clear the expedition. Any Clear turns above 999 will not be accounted for.

Players who completed the content during the first half of the period are able to earn a special decorative banner, depending on their performance. Specific requirements are based on which Line they participated in.

At the end of the Operation Period, The player's best turn record is etched onto the banner rewarded for clearing the Line.

Refraction Railway List

Line 1: MADNESS

Line 1 was the first Refraction Railway, containing enemies from the first 3 Cantos: Abnormalities from the N Corp. Inquisition, Abnormalities Alleyway Watchdog and Headless Ichthys from the Mirror of the Beginning, and some original Abnormalities first seen as events within the Mirror Dungeon.

Line 1 focuses on one long line of thirteen (13) stations with one major enemy at each. The station's major enemy is displayed in silhouette if the station has not been cleared prior.

Completion of Canto III: The Unconfronting was required to access this Line.

Only five (5) Sinners could be brought to this Line.

  • Basic - For clearing the Line (in 899 turns or less).
  • Decorating - For clearing the Line in 120 turns or less.
  • Embellished - For clearing the Line in 120 turns or less before the first half of the Operation Period.

Line 2: Möbius

Line 2 was the second Refraction Railway, using mainly abnormalities from the Reminisced League of Nine Dungeon and some original Abnormalities first seen as events in Mirror Dungeon.

Line 2 comprised of a circular line of eight (8) stations, with station nine (9), titled the Terminus. Initially, the player could only clear up to Station 3, which immediately unlocks the Terminus. Every new cycle count (returning to Station 1) allowed the player to access another Station if desired, with one selectable Ally and Enemy buff a chance of allowing you to resurrect one fallen sinner if you have any. This will be marked as an added cycle count.

At any point after the first revolution (completing Stations 1-3), the player could immediately start the fight at the Terminus to finish the Line.

Completion of Canto III: The Unconfronting was required to access this Line.

While all the Sinners on their set Identity and E.G.O were brought, the player could select only up to seven (7) Sinners at any point to a station battle. No additional Skill slots were given when deploying less than 7 sinners.

  • Basic - Obtained by clearing Line 2 with 3 or more Cycle Counts
  • Decorated - Obtained by clearing Line 2 with 5 or more Cycle Counts
  • Embellished - Obtained by clearing Line 2 with 5 or more Cycle Counts and under 200 Total Turns before the end of Season 2
  • Distinguished - Obtained by clearing Line 2 with 5 or more Cycle Counts and under 150 Total Turns

Line 3: MirrorClock OrangeRoad

Line 3 was the third Refraction Railway, using mobs from Canto V and Abnormalities from the Canto's Dungeon along with some original Abnormalities first seen as events in Mirror Dungeon.

Line 3 had a circular path with thirteen (13) stations, ten (10) of which were abnormality battles. The other three (3) stations being rest stops where the player could change the Sinners' IDs including supports. The player could rewind to any station at any time after clearing it. However, rewinding would reset progress made to what was present at the selected station, and the proceeding stations must be cleared again.

Completion of Canto V: The Evil Definining was required to access this line.

While all Sinners on their set Identity and E.G.O are brought, the player could bring up to six (6) Sinners at any point to a station battle. No additional Skill slots were given when deploying less than 6 sinners.

  • Basic - Obtained by clearing Line 3 in under 100 turns
  • Embellished - Obtained by clearing Line 3 in under 100 turns before the end of Season 3

Line 4: Masquerade

Line 4 is the fourth Refraction Railway, featuring enemies from Canto VI and Intervallo III-2, and some original Abnormalities first encountered in Mirror Dungeon events.

This marks the first appearance of Peccatula Invidiae (Envy), which can fully mimic the Sinners' Identities and E.G.O, including being able to utilize Active and Passive Support effects. Peccatula Invidiae will similarly gain E.G.O Resources as the battle progresses and can use E.G.O available to them. The enemy's Passives and E.G.O Resources can be viewed on the right side of the screen, where there will be tabs to switch between viewing one or the other.

This Line focuses on one line of thirteen (13) Stations, divided into 4 Sections and 3 rest stops, titled "Interludes." Sections 1 and 2 are comprised of three (3) stations each, with an Interlude between them. There is an Interlude after Section 2, with the last Interlude between Sections 3 and 4, both of which contain two (2) Stations. Each Section is counted as one continuous encounter, and each Station in a Section is counted as a Wave of enemies. If not previously cleared, the enemies within a Station will be displayed as silhouettes. At each Interlude, the player may change their team composition, including Support Identities if needed.

All twelve (12) Sinners are brought into the Line in a unique format introduced in this Railway called a Chain Battle. The six (6) units first selected on the pre-battle screen are initially deployed onto the battlefield with the remaining units selected as standby units. If a Sinner dies in battle, the seventh unit selected on the pre-battle screen will take their place and will continue down the line in order if more Sinners die in battle. When selecting units before battle, each numerical slot the player selects gives the chosen unit a unique buff (e.g., Slot 1 gives the selected Identity +2 to their Identity Level). The buff is fixed to that numerical slot, so unselecting a unit and picking another for the same slot will apply that buff to the new unit only.

  • Basic - Obtained by clearing Line 4 in under 100 turns
  • Embellished - Obtained by clearing Line 4 in under 100 turns before the end of Season 4
