No... I never lived a life full of hate, animosity. I am just struggling desperately to change my destiny.

–Nelly

Nelly is the Chief Butler of the Edgar Family, as part of her contract with Catherine, and is initially a major supporting character in Canto VI: The Heartbreaking. She is later revealed to be one of the main antagonists of the Canto, having "invited" the uninvited guest and spun much of the tale on its head with her own two hands.

Appearance

Nelly is a woman with long brown hair tied up behind a maid headband. She wears a maid uniform common of Edgar Family Butlers, with a crest at the collar of her dress. She carries a large brown suitcase slung over her right shoulder, where she carries her combat cutlery.

Personality

An extremely competent high-ranking Fixer in service of the Edgar family, Nelly is intally shown to be a very kind and understanding ally to the Sinners, accompanying them around Wuthering Heights as a guide. She is one of the few associated members of the manor who did not carry any personal ill will towards Heathcliff, yet was still coerced into some level of abuse by Hindley demanding her to neglect his case, showing she is fiercely loyal to her role as Butler.

You two have mired more people than you could imagine into your business. Yet you do not even talk to one another, nor do you ask questions. Do you really believe that you even deserve to move on? With such slothfulness?

No more. This tale ends here.

–Nelly, revealing her true feelings

Nelly is later revealed to have lied to the Sinners, having been not only completely aware of all the events that had transpired at the manor after Heathcliff's departure, but having been a catalyst for many of them. In fact, Nelly received a mirror from Hermann that showed her the possibilities of the Mirror Worlds, wherein she always suffered due to the fall-out of Catherine and Heathcliff and found herself unable to live for herself, causing her to grow bitter and resentful towards the world around her. Being thus manipulated by Hermann, she teamed up with the N Corp. Director to do the same to the ailing Catherine, leading her to the creation of the laboratory and spurring Catherine's death wish. Despite the great damage of the mirror to her psyche, Nelly manages to keep a calm and collected exterior.

Background

Nelly has served Wuthering Heights for the majority of her life, as she was already a Fixer when Heathcliff first arrived to the manor, when he, Catherine and Hindley were still young.

Nelly describes herself as Catherine and Heathcliff's nanny, having been their main caretaker during their youth. She is often shown to be taking care of the children, making sure they went to sleep on time, comforting Catherine when she would complain of a ghost haunting the manor, and lecturing the children when they misbeheaved and left the manor without permission.

At a point, she would discuss the choice of Catherine's to marry Linton rather than Heathcliff, which Heathcliff would listen in, causing him to decide to run away from the manor, rather than confront Catherine over her choice.

Following Heathcliff's departure from the manor, Nelly would take up the role of Chief Butler of the Edgar family, as well as personally tending to Catherine's needs as she fell into despair. At a point, Nelly would be met by Hermann who would show her the Mirror World, causing the root of despair in Nelly as she realizes she would likely remain caught in the crossfire of Heathcliff and Cathy's relationship no matter what world, wherein she would inevitably introduce the mirror tech to Catherine, planting a seed that would inevitably lead to the arrival of Erlking Heathcliff. Playing further into her plan to free herself, she would burn the letters Heathcliff sent Cathy, severing the attempt for the two to reconnect. She would be complicit in the creation of the basement and scheming of N Corp., leading to her knowing in the fact of Catherine's current state within her coffin.

She would eventually send a letter inviting Healthcliff back to the manor.

Story

Canto VI: The Heartbreaking

Part I

Nelly would be the one to first welcome the Sinners into Wuthering Heights, ushering them inside. Reconnecting with Heathcliff, she would guide the group to the central hall for the reading of Catherine's will. Being the one to break the news to Heathcliff that Catherine was dead, she would inevitably subdue him due to his obstruction of the Öufi Association as they attempt to commence the reading. Going on to explain the intricacies of Butlers to those that didn't know, Nelly makes her allegiances known as she states that she would only listen to the word of Catherine, even if Linton begged her to listen to his orders. Once Heathcliff reawakes, she would clear the air over the situation the manor went through following his departure, explaining the passing of the manor from Hindley to Catherine, something Nelly secretly had played a part in orchestrating. As the will reading progresses, the first strike of lightning would hit the manor, causing a temporary power outage.

Once the power returns to the building, the Sinners, along with Nelly would be transported to a corridor within the building suddenly. Nelly would argue over the state of the manor with Josephine, before the group would have to fight the Wuthering Heights Chief Butler as a way to protect Hindley, something chosen to be done by Heathcliff, much to Dante's surprise. The Sinners would then encounter Dead Rabbits members approaching them, wherein Nelly would warn them of the Dead Rabbits when they have red eyes. Explaining the state of depression Catherine fell into once Heathcliff disappeared, she would be asked by him if Catherine ever received any of the letters that he sent, which Nelly would act confused over the mention of letters while the lady would remain in her room during her sickness. Following this, the group would travel to the late lady's room, wherein they'd discover the Edgar Family Butlers ransacking the room to find the Catherine's diary. The Sinners would defeat the Butlers in combat, with Nelly commanding them to reveal their intentions and further return to their master. From there, the Sinners would follow the diary's instructions to the kitchen, only to discover that the building has seemingly been modified, causing the group to be lost before Heathcliff realizes the importance of the basement through Cathy's diary. Once there, they'd find Linton, causing Nelly and the others to confront him, before the man concedes to the group and reveals the basement entrance.

Part II

Finding their way into the basement, the group would stumble upon the operation headed by the former members of the Ring, involving the use of Mirror Tech on kidnapped T Corp. civilians. Nelly would immediately recognize the Golden Bough within the coffin housing Catherine, pointing it out to the group. Once progressed past the disguised members of the former Syndicate members, the group would encounter Hindley and the Dead Rabbits Boss, causing a sequence of battles ending in the defeat of Erlking Heathcliff, as well as the distortion of the regular Heathcliff.

Part III

Nelly would be the one to point out the body used for Erlking Heathcliff's resonance was that of Isabella, the younger sister of Linton. Accidentally , Nelly would reveal that Catherine was the original planner of the state of the basement, causing the widower to break down and transform himself into a state of putty- a pure matter that Aseah makes use of to bring a perfected form of Erlking Heathcliff, who begins the Wild Hunt. Once the group is saved by Vergilius, they begin to chase after Erlking Heathcliff who traveled to the rooftop with Catherine's coffin in tow, planning to bring the two Golden Boughs within the residence together.

While travelling, Nelly questions Heathcliff if he, or any of the Sinners, understand why they're chasing the Golden Boughs at all, sadly wondering if her old friend has any plans for the future, once the goal is complete. Being brushed off by Heathcliff, she would sit idly behind as the group managed to reach Erlking Heathcliff thanks to Dante's newly developed abilities. Once complete with a short battle against the Erlking, Meursault would restrain the man using his Chains of Others E.G.O. While the group debates what could have been the cause for Catherine's interest in the Golden Boughs, Outis points out the variety of suspicious actions that point towards Nelly knowing far more than she had let on, such as mention of the Dead Rabbits' eyes and knowledge of the Golden Bough. Right as she is exposed as a traitor, Nelly releases Erlking Heathcliff from his binds, defending him as he travels to the manor rooftop. She fights the Sinners to buy time for Erlking Heathcliff to continue his ascent, yet is defeated. After this, Nelly reveals that even though she loves the two, she fears the possibility of never being able to live for herself, a fear planted in her by the mirror given to her by Hermann.

She finally attempts to stop Heathcliff from progressing by revealing herself to have been one of the primary manipulators against Heathcliff's communication with Catherine, burning away his letters before they reached Cathy. Shocked by the betrayal, Heathcliff suddenly disappears on the spot, goaded on by Nelly claiming that he's returned to the Backstreets where he belongs, though he would be helped out of his state by Dante's intervention. Once returned, Heathcliff, having inherited the estate once Linton and Hindley had both passed, declares Nelly free of her contract and asks her to do as she will with her life. Breaking down, Nelly begins sobbing as the Sinners continue to the roof.

Nelly would not return until following the death of Erlking Heathcliff and erasure of Catherine, at which point she would sweep in and secure the Golden Bough from the rooftop. After informing that she will take the Bough to "the one who first showed [her] the mirror shard", she tells Heathcliff that it'd be futile to fight back. Heathcliff replies he'll eventually get the Bough and Catherine back, although Nelly seems to no longer have any knowledge of that name. Finally, she leaves, after reminding Heathcliff the Boughs may make any dream come true.

Trivia

  • Nelly is based on Ellen "Nelly" Dean from Wuthering Heights, the housekeeper at Wuthering Heights who follows Catherine after her marriage.
    • Nelly's literary counterpart is the main narrator of the story of Wuthering Heights, having witnessed much of Heathcliff's youth at the manor and his relationship to Catherine, and recounting it to the current tenant of Thrushcross Grange. Nelly shows herself to be alternatively fond or resentful of the members of the Earnshaw family and Heathcliff, and appears to never have married or have much of a tale of her own to tell, outside of the events she witnessed at the Earnshaw and Linton households. This concept is then taken to its extreme in the game, where Nelly becomes terrified by the idea of her life constantly playing out with her serving as only a minor character in other people's lives, and seeks to free herself from her role as a mere narrator.
