Garnet
Garnet (Hangul: 가넷, Ganet) is a young Fixer who grew up alongside Lapis in Vergilius' orphanage. Not long after getting his Fixer License, Lapis goes missing and he requests the help of Vergilius in discovering what happened to her and saving her life.
He is a main character in Leviathan introduced in Book2.
Appearance
Garnet has short black hair and brown eyes. He primarily wears a suit and tie with an ID around his neck when working as a Fixer with a rapier at his waist. When infiltrating the gallery of The Ring, he wears a simple black suit and tie, using Vergilius' gladius as his weapon instead of his rapier.
Personality
Garnet is a Fixer who cares very strongly for human life, which puts him at odds with the Fixers from Vergilius' Office who prioritize money. He can be described as naïve, but has a strong determination to protect the people he loves to the point that he is willing to put himself in extreme danger. He is also very timid, very unwilling to fight with members of The Ring even when he wants to save Lapis.
Story
Garnet grew up in an orphanage sponsored by Vergilius, and spent his childhood with Lapis and the other orphans. He was especially close to Lapis, and was one of the only people she would confide in. One Christmas Eve, the orphanage was attacked by Tomerry and many of the children were killed, but Garnet and Lapis were both among the survivors. This event, as well as looking up to Vergilius throughout his childhood, inspired Garnet to become a Fixer.
Half a year later, Garnet has gotten his Fixer License, and he and Lapis make plans to meet and catch up. He visits Vergilius' Office and asks him to accompany him to meet Lapis, but Vergilius refuses. However, when Garnet goes to the meeting place and cannot find Lapis and the location seems to be overrun by Syndicate members, he calls Vergilius in a panic to explain something bad had likely happened to Lapis. Vergilius agrees to help Garnet in searching for Lapis and the two Fixers investigate the location, which was actually gallery owned by the Ring. Garnet is horrified at the bloody and violent nature of the Ring's art, going so far as to attempt to help one of the people who act as a living statue, only to find that he has misunderstood as they never wanted to be saved. Ultimately, they do not gain any useful information from the gallery and return to Vergilius' Office. At the Office, they learn that a video recorded by Lapis has been sent to them, and it shows that children from the orphanage have been kidnapped and are being used for experiments in creating a new Singularity. Garnet is shocked and wishes to save Lapis and the other children, but the Fixers of Vergilius' Office only see a financial opportunity.
The Fixers of Vergilius' Office and Garnet launch an infiltration of an auction run by the Ring to achieve their goals. Once inside the Ring's Corridor, Vergilius gives Garnet his gladius and stays behind to fight a Docent of the Ring while Garnet rushes ahead to the laboratory to save the children. When he reaches the laboratory, Garnet attempts to free the children immediately, but is stopped by Rikako and Nanseul, two of the Fixers from Vergilius's Office. They explain that his recklessness would ruin the data on the Singularity and tell him he must wait for them to finish downloading the information, and Garnet reluctantly agrees. However, before the download of the data can be completed, Jumsoon, a Maestro of the Ring, arrives to the lab. Jumsoon reveals that the Ring had been involved on the attack against the orphanage in order to create perfect test subjects for their experiments. At Jumsoon's order, Nanseul reveals himself to be a traitor, having sold out the Office to the Ring before the operation began, and he stabs Rikako and pulls a lever that turns on the Singularity device.
The Singularity sends Garnet's consciousness through various Mirror Worlds, where he experiences some of the worst moments of these alternate Garnets' lives. These Mirror Worlds include several versions of Garnet mirroring characters from Library of Ruina, such as one where he and Lapis are Fixers of Streetlight Office, with Garnet taking the role of Lulu and Lapis the role of Mars and another world where he has the role of Roland and Lapis the role of Angelica. Another Mirror World has Garnet living as Maestro of the Ring, auctioning off gemstones that had once been his friends from the orphanage. Once he recovers from the disorientation and stops being forced to look into these other worlds, he is shown to still be connected to them (in a way that is similar to the Identities that the Mirror provides access to), and resonates with four different worlds at once. This process delights Jumsoon, who comments that Garnet has kept his sanity intact despite such a high refraction rate.
The researcher behind the experiments, Aseah, steps forward from the shadows and explains he has created a Singularity that can overlay multiple Mirror Worlds on a single person, but the subjects usually become insane, shatter like glass, or turn into gem-like cocoon forms. Garnet, horrified by Aseah and Jumsoon's apathy to the torture they have put the children through, launches an attack on the Maestro, determined to kill him. The two have an intense battle, with the various Mirror Worlds Garnet is channeling helping him keep up with Jumsoon's skills, using attacks and techniques from the worlds he is resonating with. However, before he can kill Jumsoon, the refraction ends, and Garnet is left as just himself. This allows Jumsoon to get the upper hand and he cuts off Garnet's legs. The cocoons of the other experiments hatch, but what emerges are not the children of the orphanage, but Peccatula. Garnet loses himself in the pain and despair and becomes a cocoon himself, with Jumsoon lamenting the loss of such a good subject for their experiments.
Later, as Vergilius and Jumsoon are fighting, Garnet's cocoon gets shattered before he can transform into a Peccatula. After the fight is over, Charon picks up a piece of Garnet's broken gem, which she shows to Vergilius. Limbus Company makes a sudden appearance in the laboratory, and Faust makes an offer to Vergilius that if he were to join the company, they can give Garnet and Lapis back to him. He accepts this offer and Limbus Company presumably collects the rest of Garnet's cocoon shards.
Mirror Worlds
During the events of Leviathan, Garnet sees into multiple Mirror Worlds.
- In a world where Garnet and Lapis are Fixers of Steetlight Office, Garnet mirrors Lulu from Library of Ruina and Lapis mirrors Mars. He wears a fur coat with a tan chest-area and blue sleeves. His weapon in this world is a black and yellow striped bat. The scene he witnesses is a direct reference to Lulu's heartbroken breakdown upon learning that Mars had been turned into a book in the Library.
- In a world that appears to be a modern metropolis instead of the City, Garnet is a young student in search of a job, who witnesses an airplane crash. He wears a black suit and loose tie.
- In a world where Garnet is a Maestro of the Ring, Garnet auctions his old friends from the orphanage, now turned into gemstones. He wears a white suit and white hat and has red streaks in his hair. His weapon in this world is a javelin. This version of Garnet resembles Jumsoon.
- In a world where Garnet is a Director of the Shi Association, he mirrors Yujin from Library of Ruina. He wears a black trenchcoat and wields a red katana.
- In a world where Garnet and Lapis are married, Garnet mirrors Roland from Library of Ruina and Lapis mirrors Angelica. He wears a black suit, gloves, and Perception-blocking mask. The scene he witnesses is a direct reference to the Furioso combat page, which shows Roland discovering Angelica has been killed by the Pianist.
