Summary

Shortly after picking up their Executive Manager, the LCB journeys to retrieve the Golden Bough within that district's Lobotomy Corp. Branch.

Along the way, it quickly becomes apparent that the Sinners have only recently met, and as of now is only barely functioning as a team: Don Quixote's Fixer fanaticism upon learning of their current destination annoys Heathcliff, quickly escalating to a full-on skirmish among some of the Sinners and resulting in the deaths of Heathcliff, Ishmael, and Ryōshū. The Guide, Vergilius, intervenes at this point, and asks Dante to "wind back the clock" as they did previously to revive the dead Sinners.
As Dante seemed clueless as to what they are supposed to do, Vergilius asks Faust to guide them. Following Faust's instructions, Dante was able to revive the dead Sinners after experiencing visions of a "gateway to Hell", and experiencing the pain that the deceased recently experienced. Further incidents occurred, showcasing major character traits of other Sinners.

Shortly thereafter, Mephistopheles ran out of fuel. Vergilius orders the Sinners off the bus to gather some Hooligans, which are then fed to the bus (to Dante and Sinclair's horror). Faust explains that the bus runs on Enkephalin, which it can extract from the nervous systems of living humans.
Just as the bus is finishing its meal, Vergilius notifies the Sinners that they are to have a "guest": a former Lobotomy Corp. employee named Yuri, who is to accompany them to the now-buried L Corp. branch (which she used to work at) and act as a guide. In return, her contract with the Fixer Office she is currently working at will possibly be extended.

As the bus approaches their destination, the Backstreets Hooligans are gradually replaced by people with insectile features, not unlike that of Gregor. As the buglike people (explained by Faust to be employees of the Old G Corp.) are intent on obstructing the LCB's journey, the Sinners leave the bus to negotiate, with Gregor unwillingly taking the lead on Vergilius' "advice".
In the ensuing conversation, it is revealed that Gregor has been a major focus of propaganda for the Old G Corp. during the Smoke War. As the Smoke War veterans continue to refuse to let the LCB pass, the Sinners are forced to resolve to violence to open the way.

As the LCB arrives at the entrance to the District 4 Lobotomy Corp. branch, they find two Fixers from Yuri's Office, Aya and Hopkins, waiting for them. While Aya holds a laid-back, friendly attitude towards the Sinners, Hopkins initially adopts a contemptuous attitude when seeing the Sinner's ragtag appearance, though this is quickly replaced by awe when he learns that the Guide of the LCB is none other than the Red Gaze.
Vergilius drags Dante aside and advises them to not have too high hopes for the Grade 8 Fixers, then retreats back to the bus with Charon as the Sinners and Fixers enter the decrepit facility.

Within Story Dungeon

Main article: Branch D-02
The Sinners and Fixers encounter more Old G Corp. veterans upon entering the underground facility. Those G Corp. veterans recognize Gregor from war propaganda they once saw, and immediately shows great animosity towards him: they treat Gregor as a traitor for his "abandoning" his comrades to the side effects of the insectification operations.
After making their way past the veterans, the LCB runs into some Peccatula, which Yuri was not able to recognize and was chastised by Hopkins for. Shortly thereafter, Aya was killed by the first Abnormality the Sinners ran into: the Ebony Queen's Apple. After defeating the Abnormality, the team makes their way down into the second floor of the Dungeon.

In the second floor of the Dungeon, the Sinners run into Gregor's old superior, who attempted to kill Gregor for his "desertion". Near his death, however, he appears to become satisfied that Gregor is "no different from [them]" upon learning of his plights after the war. Gregor borrows a cigarette from Ryōshū, which he gave as a last token to his Head Manager.

Proceeding farther into the facility, the Sinners begin falling one by one as toxic gas grenades from dead employees go off in a hallway full of corpses. Hopkins puts on a pre-prepared gas mask and bids his farewell, having learned of the poison through scans conducted previously and completed a satisfactory gathering of Enkephalin. Yuri was not informed of the gas, nor was given a gas mask, as the Office never treated her as anything more than expendable.
Before he died, Gregor gave Yuri a gas mask he found on Aya's corpse, leading Yuri to ponder whether it was right that she should have survived the site's burial during Lobotomy Corp.'s collapse. After the gas dissipated, Yuri and Dante, who was unaffected by the gas, dragged the bodies of the dead Sinners away to be revived.

After defeating the Doomsday Calendar, the team makes their way to the final floor of the facility. As Gregor approaches a containment unit pouring with golden light, they are suddenly transported to the midst of a battlefield, right from Gregor's memories.
Very soon, flashbacks from Gregor's past begins materializing, presenting memories of the modification/transformation of his arm, and his subsequent alienization from society as the Old G Corp. collapsed after the end of the Smoke War. Eventually, hands began to descend from the sky, crushing everything on the battlefield. The Sinners try escaping them, albeit to futility. Gregor points out that since the battlefield is a figment of his own ego, the only way out would be to follow how it played out in reality, by allowing them to be grabbed by the owner of the hand.

Back in the real world, the Sinners battle the Abnormality housing the Golden Bough, defeating it and reverting it to its "egg" state. However, the defeat was shown only to be a deception, and Yuri, who went forward to investigate, was devoured by the Abnormality. After defeating it for a second time, the Abnormality deployed Yuri's head as a final attempt at self-preservation, a tactic that stayed the Sinners' hand for enough time for a newly arrived party, consisting of old acquaitances of several Sinners, to take the Bough. The Sinners return to the bus dejected, awaiting their next mission.

Trivia

  • There are several unused or moved content in Canto I which were replaced:[1]
    • Faust found several objects from Branch D-02 after likely an assumed successful mission, one of which was a navigation tool with the voice of Yuri. It was installed for Charon, much to the chagrin of Gregor. (This was removed in place for a different scene involving the failure of obtaining the Golden Bough in which any reference of "Navigation Tool" was never mentioned inside.)
    • Gregor hanging the gas mask that was used by Yuri on the windshield of Mephistopheles (which was later changed to an unnamed object named as a keepsake instead). Vergilius wonders if he had a bond with Yuri, to which he denied, instead mentioning that he had a sister of her age. Vergilius asked if it will get in the way, but Charon said no, instead keeping it on the windshield as it waved like a Christmas ornament.
    • Dante's idea of trying to cheer the sinner up but gets put off by their mood was moved later than earlier. It was originally at the initially now removed cutscene.
