–Hubert, Intervallo IV: Timekilling Time |
Hubert, going by Assistant (and briefly as Mai) when undercover, is the Executive Director of T Corp. He is a supporting character of Intervallo IV: Timekilling Time, accompanying the detective team as a handler on the case of the Time Ripper while disguised as a Class 5 Auditor.
Appearance
Hubert is a pale man with curly black hair, a strand prominently hanging between his bright yellow eyes, typically sporting a confident expression. He has golden prosthetics along the side of his head, partially obscured by his dark hair, as well as golden prosthetic hands.
He is seen first in Mai's outfit, wearing a standard sepia-colored T Corp. Collector uniform with a small bowler cap with the TimeTrack logo on the front and a gold cap on the top. He wears the outer coat on his shoulders, hanging down.
At the end of Intervallo IV: Timekilling Time, he is seen wearing his own clothes, an ensemble of blue dress clothes with a white trim. He wears a long coat over a cream vest and white suit, tied with a similarly blue tie. The coat is adorned with eight parallel buttons and ends just beneath his knees, revealing blue dress pants and dark loafers. He wears a top hat atop his head in this outfit.
Notably, he appears to be entirely immune to the color draining used in T Corp.
Personality
Hubert is an eccentric man, frequently speaking hurriedly and outwardly pondering concepts despite minimal input from others. He is highly intelligent despite this, demonstrated by his ability to scrutinize the issues of inventions from solely a momentary glance. Despite his role as Executive Director overseeing District 20 and frequent exposure to the miserable people within, he wishes for the betterment of the City, holding out hope for a better future despite his self-admitted foolishness in this.
Story
Prior to Limbus Company
Little is known about Hubert's past, though he would reference the Executive Director of T Corp. in third person as previously having been an inventor, and remaining captivated by the inventions that come from District 20. He has also played a small part in Yi Sang's life, having purposefully allowed him to escape with Gubo following the fall of the League of Nine Littérateurs due to his admiration for the group's inventions.
Similarly to Stephanette, the founder of K Corp, Hubert also hints at having travelled to the edges of The Outskirts and "wished upon a star". It is implied that the wish has been granted; however, the contents of the wish is unclear, along with its relation to his founding of T Corp.
Intervallo IV: Timekilling Time
Hubert first appears while the Sinners discuss the issue of their debt within a T Corp. office, convincing Meursault to pay off the Time Tax debt through the use of one of his inventions, the Temporal Scale Gallows. While attempting the use of his invention, the machine would fail due to the Sinners living on Dante's time, rather than their own- something nobody yet knew. When Vergilius and Faust return from the meeting with upper management of the District, the trio of Rodion, Ryōshū and Hong Lu are chosen to solve the case of The Time Ripper accompanied by Hubert, who pretends to be both a Class 5 Auditor, as well as his subordinate Mai simultaneously, for his own amusement.
Finding themselves at Bumble's watch factory, the group would begin investigating the case they have been assigned. He would largely provide insight on the way T Corp. itself functions, assisting with supplementary information to the trio of detectives.
Chasing the lead of Yurodiviye members being active in the District, Hubert would inform the group on the functioning of their T Corp. Special Investigator Badges, taking the time to elaborate deeply on this. He shows interest in Dante's head, as well as their ability to resurrect Sinners that have been killed, demonstrated through Hong Lu being blown apart by a nearby Yurodiviye explosive. Following fleeing members of the Syndicate, the group would struggle to gain a further lead while stumbling upon another victim of the Distortion they tracked. Hubert would voice his interest in the Sinners thanks to their abilities to look forward and chase after the possibilities, unburdened with the same glumness that plagued the District. Capturing a Yurodiviye member, the group's interrogation would be cut short as reinforcements of the captive would be summoned. Following their battle, the group would find where a Yurodiviye Captain was stationed, believing the group to be the culprit of the stolen time. Confronting the Syndicate, they would be informed they were likely unrelated, while Hubert gives constructive criticism towards the group's inventions. He would later raise the concept of trailing the Captain once they've left the hideout, much to the Sinners' confusion. Following this concept, they would run into The Time Ripper for the first time, though would be unable to capture the Distortion at the time. Soon after, they would find the Yurodiviye Captain with his time killed, another victim of the time killer.
After the revelation that the Distortion was likely a previous member of the Yurodiviye, Ryōshū would point out the delay on the Clock Tower within the portion of T Corp. they found themselves in, causing the group to realize the Distortion's plan to subject the entire population of the District to infinite tedium. Hubert would discuss the ways he views inventions, illuminating upon a past where he had a distant connection to the League of Nine Littérateurs. Hong Lu would inquire on the previous failure of Hubert's gallows, which he would explain, allowing the group to develop a plan to use Hong Lu's time, borrowed from Dante, to catch The Time Ripper off-guard.
Following the defeat of the Distortion, Hubert would malaise on the inability of society to change, ominously claiming that the only way for suffering to cease would be through stopping time, though he does not expand on this. After the finale of the investigation, Hubert would have his clothes returned to him, giving Mai back their outfit. He would discuss some aspects of his past to Dante, telling them to always remember their abilities of time manipulation come at a price, before thanking them for allowing his dream to begin anew. Moments before leaving, he would seal a deal with Faust involving purchasing "as many Monoliths as (Limbus Company) have in stock" from Limbus Company for unknown reasons.
