But I told you time and time again, Rodya. That we must wait for the right moment.

–Sonya, Canto II: The Unloving

Sonya (Russian: Соня, Hangul: 소냐, Sonya) is the leader of the Yurodiviye, a Syndicate he co-founded with his long-term Rodion, and a supporting character introduced in Canto II: The Unloving.

Through him, the Yurodiviye has a business relationship with N Corp. and agreed to assist Hermann in her collecting of the Golden Boughs.

Appearance

Sonya is a tall man of pale complexion. He has short, messy white hair that frames his face, with bangs swept over his forehead, and intense purple eyes.

He wears layered clothing, consisting of a black vest and a grey tailcoat that reaches his calves, and white pants. He wears an ammunition belt around his right thigh, and a black belt around his waist and shoulder, from which hangs a long broadsword with a golden tassel. Around his neck hangs a pair of black-rimmed goggles with orange lenses, and he wears a black and white scarf around his neck and left arm, bearing the symbol of the Yurodiviye.

Personality

Sonya is a calm, composed individual possessing a dream of destroying the exploitative system of the City and distributing wealth to the poor who can find liberation in it's truest form. He dreams of creating an utopia where the poor are not oppressed, but instead are able to live happily and freely. In the pursuit of this dream he is more than willing to ignore whatever the cost may be, even if it involves losses in his own organization, seeing them as inevitable minor troubles on a process of moving towards progress.

Sonya is a very educated individual, and Rodion often recalls him sitting at his desk, immersed in his studies, and a worldy and confident person, having formed ties with various people all around the City. Alongside his smarts, he's a capable spokesperson, rallying people by giving speeches using big words to help the impoverished, and organizing and leading a group under the name of 'Yurodiviye'.

Hermann describes Sonya as unlike most idealists who are all theory and no action, referring to his joining the race for the Golden Bough, an item capable of truly changing the world. This image is not shared by Rodion, as Sonya's passivity was the very reason that would lead to her departure from his organization. Sonya justified this by saying that they were merely waiting for the right moment that had yet to come, and believing that to achieve monumental tasks, well thought-out policies and a great power are required, all to make the redistribution of wealth happen.

Background

Coming from District 25, he was described as a country boy by Rodya and apparently never had a good relationship with money. Similarly, he tried to keep Rodya away from money and gambling, but ultimately failed.

Much of his life prior to founding Yurodiviye is unknown, but it's said that he had always been a dreamer, with the wish to abolish the system of oppression towards the poor and give everyone a right to psychological and intellectual delights regardless of class.

Story

Canto II: The Unloving

Sonya is one of the four Syndicate leaders gambling for the chance at taking control over the Casino and the Golden Bough found inside. He arrives late to the game and spends a moment catching up with Rodion about the status of the Yurodiviye before the game begins. The reason he wants the Golden Bough is the same reason he founded his Syndicate: to destroy the system of oppression and exploration caused by those who hoard the wealth.

During the final round of the game, Rodya makes a suspicious move that causes the Tieqiu Boss to accuse her of cheating. Sonya asks to check her arm for a wish sticker, but the boss of the Tieqiu Crew insists on checking it himself, given the fact that Sonya and Rodion know each other and therefore might be working together. It turns out that she did not use any wishpower, and she asks what will happen to a player who accused another of cheating. Sonya answers with a demonstration, and a trash compactor quickly crushes the Tieqiu boss flat. He points out that this is exactly what Rodya had wanted back when they were both members of the Yurodivye and asks if she would like to return to the Syndicate. Before she can answer, the Sinners crash through the door and interrupt the conversation. Sonya acknowledges these new 'friends' of hers, then declares that she won the game and that he has no objections to her victory before leaving the room.

At the bottom floor of Branch J-03 the Sinners reach a large castle made of ice and find that Sonya has been waiting there for them to arrive. He explains to Rodion that before she got here there was no castle, simply walls of ice, and that she was currently resonating with the Golden Bough and causing these changes to happen. This castle is now a glimpse into Rodion's past, a confessional for the sin that has been haunting her for years. The two revisit her memories of the cruel pawnbroker who controlled their hometown, letting countless go hungry for the sake of her own greed. The Yurodiviye was doing nothing to stop her, nothing to help the starving children that Rodion wished to save when she co-founded it, so she had taken up the axe herself and killed the woman. While Rodion claims she committed the murder for the sake of her neighbors, Sonya disagrees and believes that she only did it to feel special. He explains that the pawnbroker was the sister of a member of The Middle, and how, after only a short time of living free and eating well, the residents of the Backstreets were killed in mass as punishment. He offers Rodya a chance at using the Golden Bough's power to create a world free of starvation and struggle, but she turns him down. He accepts her choice the same way he accepted her win in the poker game and let's her retrieve the Golden Bough without a fight.

As the Sinners attempt to escape the Ice Castle Where Neighbors Lie after retrieving the Golden Bough, Sonya shows up once again, this time to provide a distraction for them. Rodion does not trust that his offer comes without ulterior motives, but, given the lack of other options, they accept his help. He tells Dante that "That Child" will be visiting them soon, and Sinclair sees something briefly appear on the man's forehead. Just before the Sinners run off to make their retreat, Sonya informs them that the next time they meet, he will likely not be as kind as he was today, as nothing will cause him to hesitate once he sees a real chance at bringing prosperity to the people.

After leaving Branch J-03, Sonya meets with Hermann to discuss how the Golden Bough retrieval went. It had been Hermann who came up with the idea of showing Rodion an idealized world with the hope it would convince her to rejoin the Yurodiviye and, as a result, let the Golden Bough fall into their hands. He confesses that he is glad that the plan didn't work, because it meant that Rodya hasn't changed since he had last seen her, then asks if she is going to scold him for failing the mission. Hermann simply explains that she is well aware that complaining will not change the outcome and she trusts that she will come out on top at the end.

Trivia

  • Sonya is based off the character of the same name from Crime and Punishment by Fyodor Dostoevsky.
    • In the novel, Sonya is a devout Christian woman from a poor family who works as a prostitute in order to support her family, and she is a friend of the sister of the pawnbroker Rodion had killed. Sonya is the first person Rodion confesses his crime to. Upon hearing of the murders he committed, she encourages him to confess to the police to help put an end to his internal torment.
  • Sonya is a bearer of The Sign. He is able to see the mark on several of the Sinners and Sinclair briefly witnesses the mark appear on the his brow. He also familiar with Demian, for reasons likely related to them both bearing the Sign, and was aware that he had plans to make contact with the Sinners soon after the events of Canto II.
