Background

From a young age, Gregor was used as a test subject for the Old G Corp. Against his will, Hermann conducted an augmentation surgery on Gregor: his right arm was replaced with an insectoid bio-prosthetic, which had the unique ability to regenerate and did not inflict side effects, unlike the majority of augmentations performed by G Corp.

Following the operation, Gregor was kept under observation by the scientists of the Old G Corp., spending much of his childhood confined in a plain blue room. There, scientists watched over him and instructed him daily to use his arm in order to slice apples in half, to test the functionality of his new arm. For a long time, Gregor resisted, refusing to abide by these instructions. However, he would eventually reach a point where he could no longer fight back; on the day he turned fifteen years old, Gregor proceeded to give into the scientists' commands and cut down the apple. At first, Gregor believed that this would free him from the harsh reality he described as a nightmare, but the tests continued, leaving him with no choice but to go along with what he was told to do.

"Yet my doppelgänger was still holding a silly pose with a confident look on his face."

Eventually, Gregor was sent to participate in the Smoke War and granted the rank of Manager. Given the special benefits of his augmentation which the other soldiers lacked, his troops looked up to him greatly, and he was widely seen as a symbol of hope in the terror of the war. Ultimately, Gregor went on to become a widespread symbol of G Corp. war propaganda, although at a point, he deserted. Following the war, this became a reason for many Old G Corp. veterans to despise Gregor.

Once the Smoke War finally came to an end, Gregor attempted to live normally. Though the average person did not recognise him as the man from the propaganda posters, he nonetheless continued to suffer from his past, surrounded by the widespread repulsion and distrust people held towards G Corp. His arm did not assist in his attempts to become a normal citizen. At times, it became randomly agitated, attacking civilians and horrifying the crowd, despite Gregor's desperate attempts to reel it in. All Gregor could do was scream for it to be cut off, knowing well that it would always grow back.

Developments

With the passage of time, Gregor managed to grow into the more stable, humorous man seen in the present day, eventually coming to join Limbus Company as Sinner #13.

Gregor, along with the rest of the Sinners, first becomes involved with the plot of the game when they find Dante being cornered by Wolf, Lion and Panther in a forest, after which the Sinners forge their contract with Dante. On the bus, Gregor is the first Sinner to introduce himself to the Manager.

On their mission in search of the first Golden Bough, the LCB heads to the D Corp. Backstreets, where the group meets Yuri, a Fixer and former member of the fallen Wing L Corp. Gregor immediately forms a friendly relationship with the Fixer as the group travels towards the Lobotomy Corp. Branch housed in the District.

Soon enough, the LCB faces off with a group of men with insectoid heads, whom Gregor recognizes as fellow veterans of the Smoke War, belonging to the Old G Corp.

While progressing with their mission, the Sinners find several more veterans within the L Corp. Branch, scavenging for resources. The veterans quickly turn hostile as they recognize Gregor, branding him as a disgusting traitor. This sentiment is reprised later when the group encounters the Old G Corp. Head Manager, an old veteran under whom Gregor had worked. Similarly to the others, the Head Manager accuses Gregor of being a traitor, as well as a deserter, who was able to leave while the war continued for the others even outside the battlefield, an act he describes as devoid of honor.

Following these encounters, Gregor discusses the stigma against members of a fallen Wing, as well as the survivor's guilt he still carries regarding the war, both things that Yuri closely relates to. To her queries, Gregor tells the girl that she needs to carry on with the guilt, not letting it spoil her heart before dying.

Upon reaching the Golden Bough deep within the facility, the Bough resonates with Gregor, transporting the group into his fathoms of ego, taking the form of a battlefield around 70 days into the Smoke War. Here, they meet with a reminisced version of Tomah, an Assistant Private that Gregor knew during the war, created through the resonance of the Bough. Gregor is then sent back in his memories, starting from the day he awoke from the procedure, having been transformed, in his eyes, into a hideous pest. Gregor's memories then progress, as he slowly comes to terms with the fact that he has been stuck within the nightmare he believed to have escaped.

In the meantime, the fathoms created by the Golden Bough start repeating the event of meeting Tomah, though now with greater mutations, reflecting Gregor's unstable mental state. His trauma finally manifests physically through massive versions of Hermann's hands suddenly appearing from the sky, crushing the city all around the group and threatening to kill them too. At this point, Gregor realizes that, as this is his own nightmare, the way out would be to not run from the hands, but allow Hermann to grasp them, as he has never been able to truly escape from her.

The Bus after the mission at D Corp.

Once out of the dungeon, Gregor meets with Hermann and her group again, possibly for the first time since deserting the Old G Corp., proving him correct in his assumption that Hermann has always continued to shadow his steps. As the LCB continues their search for the Golden Boughs, Gregor has now come to terms to the fact he will have to face his mother and her actions eventually.

Relations

Hermann

How are you treating your present, my son? You should at least finish unwrapping what I gave you.
—Hermann

Hermann is Gregor's mother. Having been a reputable scientist and director of the Old G Corp., and currently a director of N Corp., a rival faction to Limbus Company in the search for the Golden Boughs, Hermann has always had a tight grip on Gregor for the majority of his life.

Hermann performed surgery on him in his childhood, giving him his verminous arm and abilities. Gregor states that his free will played very little role in his life and that he never once strayed from her control. When the first Golden Bough resonates with him, turning his feelings and memories into a landscape the Sinners are forced to navigate, massive hands begin to rain down from the sky and crush their surroundings. When Gregor comes to the realization that these great hands belong to her, he suggests that the group should just give in and allow themselves to be smashed by them, as that was the only option he ever had with her, exhibiting the absolute jurisdiction she held over him.

Although Gregor would eventually manage to grow into a relatively normal and free-spirited man, this was only once he escaped from her grasp following the war. Despite the fact that Hermann and her relationship with Gregor has yet to be explored in full, it is clear that she did great damage to him, and her position as his former abuser should not be undermined.

Limbus Company

Ever since the early missions together with the LCB, Gregor has shown a friendly and open attitude towards his fellow Sinners, and always attempting to make Dante feel comfortable at their new workplace. Being older than many of the Sinners, Gregor often takes on a trustworthy and dependable role with the others, particularly with the young Sinclair. This generally calm attitude leads him to enjoy the company of Ishmael, although this feeling is not quite returned, and to be often teased by the easygoing Rodion. Gregor also has a very positive relationship with Dante, who finds him to be one of the most approachable Sinners.

Yuri

During Canto I: The Outcast, Gregor forges a quick friendship with Yuri, borne out of the numerous ways he recognizes himself in the Fixer. Like Gregor, Yuri had been a member of a fallen Wing, and experienced discrimination as a consequence, lasting all the way to the present day, even in professional settings. On top of this, Yuri, having survived her fellow Agents and Clerks at the L Corp. Branch she worked at, feels immense guilt over the fact, which at times causes her to wonder whether it is wrong for her to have survived. Gregor heavily relates to this feeling, agreeing that surviving past one's brothers-in-arms felt like a sin.

Because of this, Gregor is very kind towards Yuri, looking after her all through the mission and mourning her after her death, deciding to keep her gas mask on the bus as a keepsake of her. Eventually, he confesses to having had a younger sister, who would have been Yuri's age, and the Fixer having reminded him of her.
