Enkephalin

Enkephalin is the main energy system of Limbus Company, as well as an the in-universe energy resource created by Lobotomy Corporation.

Gameplay Usage

Enkephalin is used to enter stages in the Main Story.

Enkephalin Modules can be crafted for 20 Enkephalin and are needed to enter/skip Luxcavations and Story Mode Dungeons. Additionally, Enkephalin Modules are required for claiming rewards from the Mirror Dungeon and Refraction Railway.

The maximum amount of Enkephalin that can be stored is capped by the Manager Level. By earning Manager experience from clearing stages, the Manager Level increases, which also increases the Enkephalin cap. The amount by which the cap increases starts at +3 per level up, but gradually decreases the higher the Manager Level becomes.

The Enkephalin cap starts at 60 at level 1, maxing out at 216 at level 300. A full table for the Enkephalin cap at each level, and the required Manager experience is provided below:

Replenishing Enkephalin

Enkephalin passively regenerates at a rate of 1 Enkephalin every 6 minutes. Regeneration stops once it reaches the player's Enkephalin cap.

Enkephalin can be instantly replenished with Enkephalin Boxes, Lunacy or by leveling up. It is possible to go over the player's Enkephalin cap when replenishing via these methods.

1 Enkephalin Box replenishes 60 Enkephalin instantly.
(26 * number of daily refresh done) Lunacy can be used to completely fill up the Enkephalin bar up to 10 times per day (i.e., 1st refresh is 26, 2nd refresh is 52 and so on.). Replenishing Enkephalin this way restores Enkephalin equal to the player's current Enkephalin cap. A maximum of 10 daily refreshes can be done.
Full Enkephalin replenishment from leveling up is equivalent to the player's new maximum cap.

In-Universe

Enkephalin was the energy resource which Lobotomy Corporation produced. It was extracted from the Abnormalities created through its Singularity, which produced Enkephalin when their needs were met. Enkephalin was stored in PE-boxes, and was considered an efficient and eco-friendly resource, making it popular with both other Wings and City denizens.

Enkephalin is also digestible. While it can have a calming effect, Enkephalin was a highly-addictive substance capable of creating drug addicts of both the Lobotomy Corporation employees and Sephirot, and is also known to cause hallucinations. Additionally, it is stated that repeated injecting of Enkephalin into machinery will rust it.

As of Limbus Company, the collapse of Lobotomy Corporation has made Enkephalin into a precious and limited resource. Fixers and Syndicates may scavenge collapsed L Corp. branches in search of Enkephalin and other findings, with phrases like "Lobotomy Dream" and "Enkephalin Rush" beginning to catch on.^[1]

Mephistopheles

Enkephalin is the energy resource that Mephistopheles runs on. However, it does not make exclusive use of Lobotomy Corporation-made Enkephalin, as the bus is also capable of producing it itself.

Faust states that Mephistopheles forcibly extracts Enkephalin from the brain and spinal nerves of people, of which live subjects are of greater efficiency. This generates ignition and thrust for the bus. The other parts of the body, such as blood and flesh, are processed into fuel that focus on maintaining speed.^[2]

[NOTE] Utilizing a dosage of liquid Enkephalin allows for more stable usage compared to its gaseous form. The Enkephalin can be converted into energy by plugging the module into a designated socket.
[CAUTION] Modularization of Enkephalin is an irreversible; the module may only be expended via a socket. Usage outside of intended purposes or modification is strictly forbidden.

Enkephalin Notifications

The January 23rd, 2025 update added the option for Mobile players to receive notifications when their Enkephalin supply maxes out. There are fourteen in total, written in the voices of the Sinners, Vergilius, and Charon as if they were speaking to Dante.

The Sinners' messages all have an equal chance of being displayed, with a smaller chance for Charon, and an even smaller chance for Vergilius.

Trivia

The name "Enkephalin" is the same as the neuropeptides or opioid peptides known as enkephalins.
- In the brain, enkephalins are used as signaling molecules involved in stress and pain responses.
- Enkephalins are found in high levels in the brain, mirroring Mephistopheles' method of Enkephalin extraction.
- Enkephalins bind to opioid receptors, which may reference Enkephalin's addictive properties.
