Book2
Garnet and Lapis (가넷과 라피스, Ganetgwa Rapiseu), is the 2nd chapter of the Leviathan webcomic.
Summary
”Mister!” ”
Half a year[1] after the Christmas massacre, Vergilius is reunited with one of the surviving orphans from the incident, Garnet, whom Denver, Lan Yen, Rikako, and Nanseul give a warm welcome. Throwing a dinner for the young man at a local restaurant to celebrate the occasion, Vergilius is lost in thought over his mixed feelings. Still harrowed over his guilt in being unable to save the orphanage, Garnet snaps him out of his daze out of concern for his mental well-being, though Vergilius simply reassures him that he’s fine.
Garnet, who had recently become a Fixer after turning 20[2], expresses his immense appreciation for the Color Fixer for everything he had done for the orphanage, and how he strives to become just like him and the other Fixers in his office.
”And make them pay for what they’ve done, I’ve got to climb to your league, right?” ”
Though Garnet reveals he became a Fixer out of the thirst for revenge upon those behind the orhpanage’s destruction, much to the concern of Vergilius' Office.
Vergilius tries to console him that what’s passed is gone, and regretfully remarks that “some things… are better left forgotten.” Garnet sees through his facade, knowing he’s hurting too, and attempts to warm his heart by reminding him of Lapis—the other orphan dearest to Vergilius. Ever since parting ways, Garnet remarks that she still talks about him all the time and he proposes that all three of them should reunite and go somewhere, together. Not ready to face her again, Vergilius promptly shoots the proposal down, lamenting how there’s “no good reason for [him] to meet them in person at this point.”
Unable to say anything else, Garnet regretfully relents and the table is left in an oppressive silence over the emotionally-charged scene. Attempting to change topics, Lan Yen sheepishly suggests to order another round of food, with Denver swiftly trying to lift everyone’s spirits and reassuring Garnet that they’ll take care of him and to simply enjoy himself tonight. Garnet’s mood is uplifted somewhat by her generosity, as Lan Yen warmly orders him a glass of milk—the night resuming to become something that's somewhat merry.
”I had gone to see Lapis…”
”But, something just doesn’t feel right about this place!!” ”
Sometime after, Vergilius was sitting alone in his home, still mulling over his failures of what happened last year; it was then that he received an anonymous call from a District 22 payphone, so late at night. It was Garnet, caught in a panic over the line. Calming him down from his frantic breaths, Garnet informs Vergilius that after reaching the rendezvous point where he was supposed to meet Lapis, he encountered Syndicate members within the Backstreets. Gangsters wearing animal-ear headbands and creepy animal-headed statues littered the streets—but the worst of it was how one of the Five Fingers was occupying the territory.
Four members of the Ring were directing the dreadful scene, as a high-ranking Maestro himself was behind the operation. The situation is incredibly dire, with Garnet desperately begging Vergilius on what he should even do.

Lore and Observations
- Becoming a Fixer at 20 years of age is considered young by most professionals.[2]
- District 22 has access to payphones in its Backstreets.
- The Seven Association holds orientation seminars informing fledgling Fixers on Syndicates such as the Five Fingers.[3]
- High-ranking officers of the Ring, known as Maestros, wear a three-coiled ring to signify their position.
Notes
- ↑ In Book3, it is confirmed that the rest of Leviathan takes place “half a year” after the Christmas Eve in Book1.
- ↑ 2.0 2.1 In South Korea, adolescents are only considered to become adults by age 19-20; it appears that in the setting of The City, similar standards are used to recognize whether or not someone is considered an adult. The shocked reactions of Vergil’s Office imply that becoming a Fixer at age 20 is incredibly young by most standards.
- ↑ “ ”I remember hearing about it at the Seven Association’s orientation seminar.” ”—Garnet
