The Tearful Thing is the Singularity utilized by K Corp. as a means to create the healing ampoules distributed throughout.

Appearance

The Tearful Thing appears as a massive bloodshot eyeball connected to an unseen ceiling by tendons, with a collection of screens surrounding it. Beneath it is a pool of the collected and unrefined tears it disperses. Physically, it has grown over time, yet has has not been shown besides its current size.

Backstory

The Tearful Thing was first found during Stephanette's expedition to the Outskirts with an unknown boy, wherein the boy would seemingly have his wish granted and turn into the Singularity. Stephanette, surprised, yet understanding, would collect the Singularity and bring it with her. At some point, having a major director role within the K Corp. Wing, she would utilize the Singularity through reading sad or heartwarming stories to it, something that provided a steady stream of tears, though this would be deemed "too inefficient" by Alfonso, who would wait for Stephanette's natural death and later takeover control of managing the Singularity, switching to using upsetting footage and torture of employees as means to providing a greater flow of tears from the Singularity. These tears would be used to repair the torture victims, providing an essential loop to Alfonso's plan. She would later involve Dongrang in this process, establishing as him as one of the primary caretakers of The Tearful Thing.

Story

The Tearful Thing is first revealed when the Sinners reach the pinnacle of the K Corp. headquarters, where the screening room was located. Samjo, declaring his full trust within K Corp., would dive into the unrefined tears, submerging and disappearing within the liquid. Dongrang would then expand upon the function of the Singularity, to the active dismay of the Sinners and Dongbaek. Revealing the master plan involving the Singularity, utilizing the attack involving the Brazen Bull spurred by the Technology Liberation Alliance as means to generate more footage of destruction, Dongrang would begin to show the creation process of the tears. Soon after, Dongbaek would be stabbed with the Golden Bough, transporting the Sinners a reminisced version of the League of Nine Littérateurs, away from the screening room proper.

Later, once the Sinners have been freed from the Golden Bough's influence, they would see The Tearful Thing again, though the majority of those that witnessed it- all of the Sinners besides Dante- would have their memory wiped involving the information regarding the Singularity.
