The Kurokumo Clan (흑운회, heug-unhoe) is a Syndicate in the Backstreets of the City, and a recurring faction first introduced in Library of Ruina.
Overview
The Kurokumo Clan is one of the subsidiaries of The Thumb. The Kurokumo Clan is notable for its focus on swordplay, and is recognizable by their usage of odachi[1] and their extensive augmentation tattoos, which depict the black clouds the Clan is named after and grant its users a level of full-body protection, particularly against stab injuries.[2] Their main form of revenue is extortion, such as requiring tolls for passage between territories, or payments from Nest citizens in exchange for "protection".[3] In recent times, the Clan has also been interested in the dealing of artifacts such as Monoliths.
The Kurokumo Clan originates from the eastern quarter of the City, and is active in the southern quarter. After the collapse of Lobotomy Corporation, the Kurokumo Clan went into frequent conflict with other Syndicates in an attempt to control the territory of Nest L. In recent times, the Clan has been active in the Backstreets of District 20 as well, under the command of Captain Jun. Notable rival Syndicates of theirs are the Blade Lineage, which they have been competing with both in District 12 and District 19, and the Rusted Chains.[4]
Like many other Syndicates, the Kurokumo Clan presents a strict hierarchy:[5] at its head is the Patriarch (組長, Kumichō), under whom are his Captains (頭, Kashira), supported by their aides (補佐, Hosa).[6] Each Captain commands a small group made up of the rank and file of the Syndicate, the henchmen, or Wakashu (若衆, Wakashū). Captains command teams of a few underlings, though they can reach around a dozen.[7] The Clan is known to have at least thirty-four Captains, each of which can be recognized by a sword with their number engraved upon the blade.[8] The Captain's sword, called the Kokuuntō, is inherited by the Captain's successor upon their death, together with the late Captain's team.
The Patriarch of the Kurokumo Clan is a famed swordsman, who used to be numbered among the Ten Blades of the East. The Patriarch lost his claim to the title during the events of Library of Ruina: following Captain Sayo's team's failure to complete a mission on behalf of the Thumb, his left hand was cut off, severely hindering his swordplay.[9][10]

Fighting Style
While the Kurokumo Clan members have very generally similar skills, they can be divided into two types, the offensive Kurokumo Henchmen and the defensive Kurokumo Henchwomen. It can also be divided between the members wearing black jackets and those without jackets. All variations are Slash weak and Pierce resistant with a similar set of 3 Slash skills and a Defensive skill. Their first skill is a Lust skill that simply inflicts Bleed potency. Their second skill is a 1 coin Lust skill that inflicts bleed, plus additional behaviour that changes depending on which of the 4 used it. Finally, there is the Wrath skill that changes based on the version. The Henchmen use a 3 coin skill that grants Slash DMG Up and inflicts bonus damage to targets with bleed, while the Henchwomen use a 2 coin skill that grants them protection and inflicts additional Bleed. The black jacketed versions also gain additional coin power against targets with 5 Bleed. For a defensive skill, the Henchmen have an evade that grants Slash DMG Up on evade while the Henchwomen use guards that gain Protection.

Trivia
- The Kurokumo Clan is based on the Japanese yakuza.
- The Kurokumo Clan's structure is directly based on the structure of Yakuza families as well, with an oyabun, or "family head", called Kumichō (組長) at the top, followed by their Wakagashira (若頭), or "first sons" of the family head, the Wakagashira-hosa (若頭補佐), lieutenant or deputies, and the Wakashū (若衆), the "younger siblings" of the Wakagashira.
- In the Korean version of Library of Ruina and Limbus Company, the term Kumichō, localized in the English version as Patriarch, is rendered as "조장", which translates to Captain, and the term Kashira, localized in the English versions as Captain, is rendered as "부조장", which translates to Vice Captain. The hierarchy of the Clan is the same in either case, presenting the Kashira as the direct underlings of the Patriarch.
- While the English localization of the games is consistent in its usage, in the English translation of The Distortion Detective the Kashira Yuri is referred to as Vice Captain: this appears to be merely a localization error, with Yuri sharing her rank with the likes of Sayo and Jun.
- The name "Kurokumo", chosen for the English translation, is the romanization of the Japanese 黒雲 (Black Cloud), which is reflected in the Syndicate's logo.
- The logo features the character 云 (Un), stylized with various clouds. 云 is the simplified character for "Cloud", as opposed to 雲 (Kumo), which is the traditional one.
- Other members of the Kurokumo Clan seen in additional Project Moon media include:
- Sayo (Library of Ruina) - A Captain of the Kurokumo Clan.
- Yang (Library of Ruina) - A henchman of the Kurokumo Clan.
- Gin (Library of Ruina) - A henchman of the Kurokumo Clan.
- Yuri (The Distortion Detective) - A Captain of the Kurokumo Clan. She was guarding the highways entering Nest L and forced a toll on unwary travelers. She was killed by Vespa Crabro.
