Funeral of a Dying Butterfly

From Limbus Company Wiki

Funeral of a Dying Butterfly is a non-fightable Abnormality that can be encountered in the Mirror Dungeon through Abnormality events.

It is related to Funeral of the Dead Butterflies from Lobotomy Corporation.

Appearance

Funeral of a Dying Butterfly is a tall humanoid wearing a white buttoned-up shirt, black pants, shoes, and gloves. In its right arm it holds his suit jacket and in its left carries a plastic bag dripping blood. Though Funeral of the Dead Butterflies has five arms, Funeral of a Dying Butterfly possesses only three; its third one, wearing a black sleeve, protrudes from the base of its neck and holds a lit phone in its hand. The Abnormality's head resembles that of a newspaper opened and cut into the shape of butterfly wings.

An alleyway of black and white.

The single streetlamp lighting the path makes the scenery all the more hazy.

Someone is standing in the light.

Pipipipip-

The device in the Abnormality's hand sounds an alarm.

'The results of the job interview for the big company I had last month are out today.'

'Everyone in this street prepares for exams and interviews.'

'They wait for the results to be announced, staking all they have on them, and once they're told they failed, they go far away and disappear.'

'So I changed my head; I'd like to fly away even if I don't make it.'

'Will you check the results for me?'

The device displayed a message that it didn't pass.

'What does it say? Did I pass?'

Tell the truth.

'So I failed'.

The coat it held in one hand falls to the ground.

At the same time, the plastic bag in the other hand begins to rustle.

'It's actually fortunate, I figured I'd fail.'

'Where do we go when we die, I wonder?'

'Will there be a flower bloomed at our last destination?'

Right after that, the butterfly on the head flew into the sky, and the empty body collapsed to the ground.

And the head that must have belonged to the collapsed body rolled out of the bloodied bag.

It's such a heavy husk that the pupa left behind.

Say that it passed.
'Thank you, I should get going now, the orientation is probably starting soon.'

It spoke, wearing the coat it was holding in one hand.

'I won't need this anymore.'

And the butterfly walks away to carry pollen.

We can only wish that at least a small beam of sunlight shines over its destination.

CoinIconGlow.png Check Passed

[Sinner] tries to comfort the Abnormality by saying that it will pass next time.
I also quickly add that what really matters is the will to pass…
… and even if it fails again, there'll always be a different path.

'You share such kind words to a stranger.'
'Right. I'll try again, and I'll make it this time.'
'But even if I don't… should I continue to live on, I'm sure I'll stumble across another opportunity. A different path.'
'Thank you.'

Fluttering butterflies dance around us, forming a line of butterflies before following [Sinner]'s shadow.

[Sinner] interrogates the Abnormality, suggesting that maybe it just didn't do enough to prepare for the interview.
I also quickly tried to add that what really matters is the will to pass…
… but the Abnormality is already casting a downward gaze, beaten down from [Sinner]'s brutally rational advice.

'I'm not looking for an advice right now.'
'No, actually, I don't think your advice will be of any comfort to me, now or later.'

The streetlight dies, and shadow fills the space.
I can no longer feel the Abnormality's presence.

Trivia

  • Funeral of a Dying Butterfly is most likely based on the Korean "Guwraso", or overworked salaryman. It claims that many like it flew away after failing to secure the job they applied for- something which the Abnormality reveals to be a metaphor for suicide (referencing death and the afterlife) if the player confesses to Funeral of a Dying Butterfly that it did not pass.
  • This Abnormality's second E.G.O Gift, 'Cantabile', refers to a musical term that means "to play in a lyrical/singing fashion".
