Rodion's love of gambling is a likely nod to Fyodor Dostoevsky's gambling habit. His novel "The Gambler" was written to pay off a gambling debt. Rodion Raskolnikov is never established as a gambler, himself, so I think it's most likely that she was based off of Raskolnikov and Dostoevsky, both.
