–Xue Pan, Canto VIII: The Surrendered Witnessing |
Xue Pan is a member of the Xue Family and a candidate of the Family Hierarch Evaluations. A known troublemaker in his family, he is a purveyor of Jar Monsters that he commands. He is a minor antagonist in Canto VIII: The Surrendered Witnessing.
Appearance
Xue Pan is a tall man with notably gray skin and piercing amber eyes. He has shaggy brown hair, which is longer on the back of his head, fashioned into long braids that coil across his entire body, with several orange bows tied across its length. He dons a miniature wuliu mian atop his head, with two sets of tassels on each side. He wears an amber robe, with wide sleeves revealing an inner lining of orange. Beneath a yellow sash at his waist, his clothes are covered in assorted talismans, similarly visible on the Jar Monsters he commands. He wears a set of loafers and wrappings on his legs.
As a child, he was still taller than the average youth. He wore similar clothing of a brown-orange robe, though his hair was much shorter, he did not wear a wuliu mian, and he did not wear the several talismans across his body.
Personality
Visibly unwell, Xue Pan is a deranged man who cares little for the wellbeing of others. He is willing to put others at risk for his own enjoyment, choosing to allow his Jar Monsters to attack other Family Hierarch Evaluations candidates, believing it to be something treasured and worth sharing, in a macabre sense. He is outwardly spiteful as well, threatening Hong Lu in the moments before round two.
Xue Pan is shown to have been much more meek in his youth, worrying about the dangers of Daguanyuan's practices and wishing to not participate.
Story
Prior to Limbus Company
As a child, Xue Pan feared the practices of Daguanyuan, once begging Jia Baoyu to save him from having to participate. Much to his chagrin, Jia Baoyu chose to not do anything that would save him from participating, creating a lifelong sense of distaste for Jia Baoyu.
Xue Pan was killed on several occasions in his life, causing gradual changes of his personality throughout his life. Xue Baochai alludes that this has always been an unsuccessful attempt to tame him.
Canto VIII: The Surrendered Witnessing
Xue Pan was the 27th candidate of the first round of the Family Hierarch Evaluations. When called upon by Jia Zheng, he approached the podium rather than the designated platform area the candidates typically stood upon. Despite being told to move to the platform, he'd remain at the podium and place a talisman-covered jar down, from which Jar Monsters emerged. As the creatures began to attack the audience, slaughtering potential candidates, Xue Pan reveled in the chaos. Following a short battle with the Sinners, the creatures returned to their jars, to which Xue Pan requested the verdict for his solution to immortality from the judges in exchange for the clay from the jars. In response, he passed the first round.
As Hong Lu and the Sinners rode the elevator to the grounds the second round of the Family Hierarch Evaluations were to take place on, Xue Pan shouted a threat towards Hong Lu, determined to behead the Sinner.
During round two of the Family Hierarch Evaluations, Xue Pan inevitably encountered Hong Lu, motivated by his past spite towards the man over never being able to afford the same favor the gem of the Jia Family was awarded. Despite his hatred for the man, Hong Lu mentioned that, if possible, he would have given the favor to Xue Pan, only furthering his rage. Commanding Lin Daiyu to assist him taking down Hong Lu, he was ignored by her, leading to annoyance over her insubordination. Xue Pan attacked the Sinners alongside his Jar Monsters, only to be defeated shortly. Unwilling to allow this, he made a final attempt to stand up to his enemies, only to be cut short as he is killed and eliminated from the Family Hierarch war.
His death would be taken lightly by Xue Baochai, who knew he would just later be revived again.
