–Night Drifter, Canto VIII: The Surrendered Witnessing |
The Night Drifter is a drunken assassin working in District 8. He is a minor antagonist in Canto VIII: The Surrendered Witnessing.
Appearance
The Night Drifter is an elderly man with long gray hair tied behind his head, and a similarly gray beard on his chin, curling at the end. He wears a dingy straw hat with two hanging straps, as well as a large green scarf around his neck. Beneath this scarf, he wears a brown-and-gray hanfu, tied at the waist by a dark sash and ropes. His feet are wrapped in gray cloth, connected to similarly gray soles. He is seen wielding a wooden staff with a single leaf at its top, as well as a large orange drinking gourd with a small yellow sash tied at its middle.
Personality
The Night Drifter is a highly capable man, reacting laxly while carrying out his assassin work, confident he will succeed. He has a penchant for drinking, which allows for him to better handle his opponents. Like most of those working in line of the familial battles within Daguanyuan, he has little moral qualms with attacking unwilling combatants when ordered to.
Story
Following the first round of the Family Hierarch Evaluation, Hong Lu and the Sinners returned to Baoyu's residence. Here, the Night Drifter, alongside a gang of podao-wielding assassins, broke into the residency through the roof. While the Sinners were capable of fending off several of the assassins, the Night Drifter joined the scuffle. Despite Outis attempting to gleam information from the man, he simply states that he has no name yet is known by others as the Night Drifter. Easily dispatching several of the Sinners, the Night Drifter crushes the brain of Hong Lu, lamenting that the victim may have been as skilled as himself, had Hong Lu been trained under his tutelage. Believing his job to be done, the Night Drifter, alongside the remaining assassins, then disappeared into the darkness.
He is later mentioned to have been among the assassins hired by the mother of Xue Baochai, looking to eliminate Hong Lu.
