–Hermann, Canto I: The Outcast | ||
The New League of Nine Littérateurs is a faction based in N Corp., led by Director Hermann. Their goals and methods often align with those of Limbus Company, making use of E.G.O and carrying a vested interest in researching the Mirror. The New League directly contrasts the LCB in their search for the Golden Boughs.
Overview
The faction was created as an attempt by N Corp. Director Hermann to reunite the former researchers of the League of Nine Littérateurs from S Corp., whose members had been pioneers of Mirror technology and of the research into Mirror Worlds. Hermann was acquainted with the powers of Mirror technology since before the fall of the League of Nine, and had already come in contact with the Littérateur Gubo, who became her collaborator. After the group's dissolution, Gubo took his fellow researcher Yi Sang with him to N Corp., where they began working for Hermann. Former Littérateur Aseah would soon join the group as well, and the faction would take the name of New League of Nine Littérateurs.
The New League began researching Mirror technology, with Yi Sang being tasked with finding a way to destroy the Mirror Worlds, Aseah working on a system to overlay Identities, and Gubo hunting down the former members of the old League of Nine.[1] Eventually, Yi Sang would abandon the New League and flee N Corp., while Aseah would be kidnapped by the Ring. The former would never return to N Corp., while the latter would be recovered by Gubo, and return to the New League followed by a number of researchers from the Pointillist faction of the Ring.
The faction would come to recruit Sonya of the Yurodiviye and Huan of the Jia Family; later on, the former Whaler Ahab and the former Chief Butler of the Edgar Family Nelly would join the group as well.
The New League utilizes Abnormalities and is able to extract E.G.O from them, making use of N Corp. E.G.O in combat.
Goals
The goals of the New League of Nine Littérateurs are largely unknown at this time, though the faction expresses clear interest in the search for the Golden Boughs. The New League of Nine Littérateurs is heavily involved in the study of Mirror technology and Mirror Worlds, with Hermann directing her researchers to find a way to destroy all the worlds and the possibilities reflected in the Mirror.[2] Whether this is the ultimate goal, or a milestone in the process of achieving said goal, is currently unclear.
The New League, particularly Hermann, presents a recurring interest in researching and creating a form of pure human. The faction's experiments both in Wuthering Heights and in their headquarters involve making use of human subjects to produce a "dough", a pure being free of dregs upon which any Identity can be applied.[3] The doughs created as result of these experiments appear to be masses of flesh. Upon being superimposed with an Identity, a murky mist will emerge, and the flesh will take the form of the Identity.[3] A failed experiment will result in the dough not changing shape, but becoming animated. These doughs are used by the New League's members for physical training.[4]
The New League's research aims to reach a point beyond the dough, to a form of primordial humanity, which is noted to be quite similar to the Imperial Worm carried by the Hongyuan Hierarch.[5] Despite this, it appears the ultimate endpoint of the experiments is known only to Director Hermann, and even the high ranking members of the factions are not privy to the details.[6]
Relations with other Factions
Yurodiviye
A Syndicate originating from Y Corp. that has slowly spread through all the Nests of the City. Its leader Sonya is connected to one of the Sinners, Rodion. Hermann had apparently tasked him with retrieving the Golden Bough at J Corp., though how deep their connection goes is currently unclear, given that Sonya also appears to have ties with Demian's faction.
The Ring
Some time before the beginning of Limbus Company, the Ring kidnapped researcher Aseah, a member of the League of Nine from N Corp. Despite the circumstances, Aseah and Maestro Jumsoon developed a professional relationship with one another due to Jumsoon's fascination with the Mirror Worlds he could see using N Corp.'s Glass Window, aiding in Aseah's research as the two becoming mutual partners.
Due to the Syndicate's collaboration with N Corp., rumors spread across certain Wings and Grade 1 Fixers that the Ring Finger was observing an unknown Singularity.
Wuthering Heights
Hermann carried a certain interest in the River flowing beneath Wuthering Heights in Nest T, which she believed would help her research on the primordial human form. Having gotten in contact with the Butler Nelly, Hermann offered the lady of the house, the inventor Catherine Earnshaw a contract: with Catherine's collaboration in turning the manor's basement into a laboratory, Aseah and former Ring researchers began conducting Mirror World experiments, gathering human subjects with the help of Linton Edgar and turning them into "dough" to create "primordial humans". The experiment seems to have been successful, having managed the perfected summoning of the Identity of Erlking Heathcliff.
Following the events of Canto VI, the laboratory under Wuthering Heights has become defunct.
Shi Family
During the Hongyuan Family Hierarch Evaluations of 985, the New League collaborated with the Shi family of Daguanyuan, having hired them to void the results in the case a Shi family candidate failed to win. In return, the New League would be taking a reward from the Daguanyuan treasury.
During Canto VIII, the New League member Jia Huan, accompanied by Gubo and a small faction, joins the Evaluation. While initially assumed to be after the Golden Bough located in the Daguanyuan treasury, the two are later revealed to have been planning to qualify third and recover the Xianhuang Worm, the Imperial Anamnaworm carried by the Family Hierarch Jia Mu, a specimen that came incredibly close to Hermann's idea of humanity. The Anamnaworm was recovered following Jia Mu's defeat at the hand of Hong Lu: while it was in a weakened, dying state, Gubo believed it would suffice for their objectives.
