Identities
For a list of individual deployable Identities, see List of Identities.
Identities (인격, in-gyeok) are an invention making use of Mirror technology, enabling someone to overlay their own body and consciousness with an individual from another Mirror World. They can also be harnessed in a slightly different form through the use of the Glass Window.
Identities make up the core gameplay of Limbus Company, and are a common point of discussion in its story.
Overview
Identities, utilized through access to other Mirror Worlds via technological inventions, are a means of temporarily overlaying an individual with the identity of someone from an alternate world. When someone has an Identity applied to them, everything about them is reflected by the person they are taking unto themselves, including appearance, memories, and personality. Though they are only given the ability to exist in another world thanks to someone else, the individual being taken from their original world seems to have full control of themselves when summoned as a Mirror Identity.
While further details are known about Limbus Company's use of Mirror-sourced Identities, it is not clear if the technology functions the same way in every case. After all, the Identity system is not exclusive to them, but can be utilized by anyone with access to the right technology and know-how.[1]
Limbus Company's Use
As utilized by the LCB, Identities are alternate forms of the Sinners borrowed from other Mirror Worlds via the Mirror. This particular system was developed by Faust and Yi Sang,[2][3] and allows Identities to be found and "extracted" via the engine of Mephistopheles on a random, luck-dependent basis.[4][5] Mephistopheles' extraction pool is largely limited to Identities from worlds considered "close" to the Sinners' Mirror World, however, the range of Extraction grows in conjunction with their experiences, as the group observes specific possibilities along their journey.[6] This range is said to stretch approximately three years into the past or future of their present day, with the exception of Walpurgis Night occurrences, where it grows up to about ten years.[7]
Identities are stored and extracted in the form of Identity Cards: small, rectangular objects depicting the Sinners' alternative selves.[8] Dante carries these around with them,[9] and inserts the cards into their company-issued PDA for use in battle.[10] In order to equip Identities, Dante calls forth the mental image of a particular Identity, and then makes an unspoken agreement with the necessary Sinner, at which point the sound of glass shattering will be heard and the Sinner will be overlaid with the Identity.[11] While the Sinners seem to be able to tell what an Identity does with their body,[12] they are not given any kind of lasting access to the Identity's own memories and knowledge.[13] Additionally, the manager can "synchronize" an Identity with the PDA and the bus window, allowing Dante to communicate with them.[11] Here, the Identities are able to see into the LCB's world from their own through the opaque window.[14]
Upgrading and Uptying Identities
Identity Uptying is the process of synchronizing an Identity with the LCB's world using Thread, a physical representation of Mirror World possibilities.[15][16] Uptying helps a Sinner to become one with their Identity, allowing the Identity to better transfer their knowledge and combat prowess to the alternate world, and making the Identity more effective overall.[15] Similarly, use of Identity Training Tickets provides an Identity with certain experiences, leading to physical improvements and enhancements.[17] Identity levels and caps are canon in-universe, and their values are tied to the mounting effects of the LCB's increasing Golden Bough count.[18]
The New League of Nine Littérateurs's Use
The members of the New League of Nine Littérateurs have discovered two ways of harnessing Identity technology. While the group has primarily concerned itself with the Mirror throughout Limbus Company, Glass Window-based Identities are depicted in Leviathan. Use of the Glass Window is described as more unstable than the Mirror, but with the potential to be much greater.[19]
Glass Window Identities
In Leviathan, Aseah conducts research on Identity technology through use Young-ji's Glass Window, which has the ability to superimpose an individual with another Mirror World. The device appears to work by generating rifts in the Glass Window which are then concentrated on the subject of interest.[20] This process involves a refraction rate, which is what dictates how many separate worlds are stacked.[21] With this, a subject can have a number of their alternate selves layered on top of them, all fighting for dominance.[22] As a result, unlike Identities supplied by the Mirror, the Glass Window allows an individual to juggle up to thousands of Identities at once. Ideally, someone will be able to withstand the refraction and harness these alternate selves by interchangeably tapping into their variety of memories and abilities.
The higher the refraction rate, the riskier the technology becomes, as it grows increasingly difficult for the individual to maintain their mind under the weight of the Identities.[21] Previously, someone who cracked under the pressure of these reflected worlds would simply shatter into pieces.[23] However, after the second passing of the White Nights (Angela's decision to return the Light to the City), subjects instead began to transform into colorful cocoons.[23] At some point after this transformation into a cocoon, the individual will either be "seized by sin" and metamorphosize into one of the seven types of Peccatula, or endure a "process" in order to emerge a Distortion.[24] While there appear to be specific, consistent conditions dictating whether someone becomes a Peccatulum or Distortion in these cases,[24] the details have historically been censored in text and are thus still unknown.[25]
Mirror Identities
Since before the events of Canto VI: The Heartbreaking, N Corp.'s New League has been attempting to create something known as "the primordial human".[26] In the process of achieving this, they have been experimenting with Mirror-sourced[27] Identities in the creation of a "new human"—by making use of what they refer to as "dough".[26] Dough is created by literally melting down human beings into chunks of flesh, which are considered to be the "pure form of humanity".[28] A dough allows for the "safe" and "secure" application of an Identity from absolutely any world;[28][29] while what this means compared to other Identity application processes is left vague, it may refer to how Identities are traditionally forced out of one's body upon death.[30]
An Identity applied to dough is referred to as a "perfected" Identity and is considered fully primed,[31] possessing more power than a typical Identity.[32] Unlike Limbus Company's process of overlaying Identities, this method does not appear to require consent from the individual taking the Identity onto themself.[33] Attempts at superpositioning Identities over dough are not guaranteed to be successful, however, in which case the former humans remain in the form of crawling sacks of flesh.[34]
The League has also concerned itself with "fully intact" Identities, which seem to be distinct from perfected Identities. These full Identities do not make use of dough, but require that the individual receiving the Identity be free of consciousness, and demand an immense amount of power for the summoning.[35] With these, the intention is to permanently overwrite the individual with the summoned Identity.[35]
It is yet to be described how exactly the New League of Nine Littérateurs uses the Mirror and applies Identities, or how similar their process is to Limbus Company's own methods.
Gameplay
For more information on the use of Identities in combat, see Battles.
Sinner Identities are the primary means of customizing a player's approach to combat. Every Identity features a unique "kit", utilizing the same general pool of Sins and Keywords to different ends. As the Sinners' appearances differ across Mirror Worlds, so do their Resistances, Traits, stats, and behaviors. Each Identity's unique attributes tend to make them more suited for certain archetypes within battle, such so that they specialize in the likes of dealing damage, inflicting Count, or sustaining hits. One of the only things not dictated by an Identity are the Sinner's Sin Resistances, which are instead reliant on the E.G.O utilized last, or the equipped Zayin E.G.O if one has yet to be used.
Additionally, every Identity possesses at least one Combat and Support Passive which activate upon meeting specific Sin requirements. The unit that Passives apply to differs based on the deployed Identities and Passive requirements, such that in cases where only one Identity is deployed, they may be the beneficiary of every available Support Passive. Certain Passives allow Identities to synchronize on account of shared Trait Keywords, calling back to certain Mirror Worlds and allegiances among the alternate Sinners.
Leveling
Identities begin at Level 1 and can currently be leveled up to Level 55. Levels raise an Identity's HP, Defense Level, and the Offense Levels of each Skill. Identity Levels are not shared among Sinners, and upgrading one Identity will never have any effect on the stats and performances of others.
For a new player, Identities can be maxed out to Level 40 regardless of progress. This number is then raised by 5 for every Canto unlocked after Canto V. On the other hand, players up to date with the main story content will have their Identity Level cap increased by 5 upon the release of the subsequent Canto, coinciding with the start of a new Season.
All Identities gain EXP naturally upon completing a story stage with a battle, whether or not the stage has been completed before. All equipped Identities will receive EXP, however, those who did not participate in battle will only receive around 70% of those who did. Every Identity who participated and every Identity that did not will receive equal amounts of EXP, with the exception of Identities at or near the Level cap, who will stop receiving EXP upon reaching said cap.
Alternatively, Identities can be supplied EXP through the use of Identity Training Tickets, or elevated to a particular level via Level Boost Tickets. While Level Boost Tickets tend to only be given out as rewards (such as for Attendance Check Events), Training Tickets can be accessed through a wide variety of means, primarily the Luxcavation game mode. As with direct EXP acclimation, completing story stages will also supply a player with a handful of Training Tickets. The worth of the Training Tickets and EXP given out for story stages does not increase with battle difficulty or story progression.
The cost to level one Identity is the same, regardless of rarity. The amount of EXP required to take an Identity up one level increases exponentially until Level 45, where it begins to rise more gradually. To take a single Identity from Level 1 to Level 55 requires 69 Tier IV Identity Training Tickets.
Uptying
Identities begin at Uptie Tier I and can currently be Uptied to Tier IV. Each subsequent Uptie will either enhance or upgrade the Identity's Skills and Passives, as well as enhance its Speed. As with Levels, Uptie Tiers are not shared among different Identities.
- Tier I is the base level. The Identity will only have access to its Skill 1, Skill 2, Defense Skill, and all Combat Passives that do not require E.G.O Resources.
- Tier II upgrades the Identity's Skills and unlocks Combat Passives that require E.G.O Resources.
- Tier III further upgrades the Identity's Skills and unlocks its Support Passive and Skill 3.
- Tier IV further upgrades the Identity's Skills, and in some cases, its Passives. The Defense Skill also gains a Sin Affinity if it did not previously have one.
- Tier II-IV may also unlock variants of existing Skills.
The Uptie costs for one Identity is as follows:
| Automatically achieved after completing Canto I | 10 Thread | 20 Thread | |
| Automatically achieved after completing Canto II | 40 Thread | 80 Thread | |
| 50 Thread + 20 Sinner Egoshards | 100 Thread + 30 Sinner Egoshards | 150 Thread + 50 Sinner Egoshards | |
| Total | 50 Thread + 20 Sinner Egoshards | 150 Thread + 30 Sinner Egoshards | 250 Thread + 50 Sinner Egoshards |
Uptying an Identity to Tier III also unlocks the Identity's post-Uptie art and Identity Story, with the LCB Sinner Identities as the sole exception. Once obtained, an Identity's voicelines are always accessible.
PDA Voicelines
Each Identity comes with a unique set of voicelines reflecting their individuality, whose occurrences are tied to battle, time, and leisure. The main menu's "Window" tab has the option to feature any Identity owned by the player, where the Identity will then greet the manager depending on certain scenarios:
| Occasion | Occurrence |
|---|---|
| Morning Greeting | Takes place between 6:00 AM to 12:00 PM (GMT +9) upon entering the Window menu. |
| Afternoon Greetings | Takes place between 12:00 PM to 6:00 PM (GMT +9) upon entering the Window menu. |
| Evening Greetings | Takes place between 6:00 PM to 2:00 AM (GMT +9) upon entering the Window menu. After 2:00 AM, no evening greetings will trigger again until 6:00 AM. |
| Chatter #1 | Clicking either on the portrait of the present Sinner, or their character icon on the side of the PDA. |
| Chatter #2 | |
| Chatter #3 | |
| Post-Uptie Chat 1 | Same as Chatter, but requires Uptie Tier III or higher. |
| Post-Uptie Chat 2 | |
| Idle | Stay idle for more than a minute while displaying the Window menu. Previously played atop the other primary menus, but was eventually changed to Window-exclusive. |
