Associations
Fixer Associations, or Associations (협회, Hyeobhoe), are large, well-known organizations made up of Fixers and Offices. There are 12 total Associations in the City, each of which possess their own unique area of expertise and code of conduct.
Fixer Associations may be hired by anyone, so long as they pay the expected fee.
Overview
The 12 Associations are the major collective that controls the flow of Fixer work, each of them specializing in a different field. Associations are in charge of their affiliated Fixer Offices (known as Associate Offices), and the Fixers who work for them directly (known as Associate Fixers).[1] Cases requesting the work of Fixers are sorted according to type and then sent out to be handled by the respective Association.[1] From there, Associations delegate requests directly to their Fixer Offices or Associate Fixers.[1] Due to their large scale, Associations are able to take on jobs from all around the City, provided that the work falls into their particular specialty.
For Fixers, working for an Association or Associate Office comes with the advantage of a stable, predictable salary, and having requests handed out by the Association instead of having to deal with clients directly.[2] However, they are also forced to accept every request assigned by the Association, regardless of how unsavory or risky the job may be.[2] Working as an Associate Fixer specifically may also come with unique expectations, such as the Dieci Fixers' need to be strong and consistent studiers.
The Hana Association acts as the head of the other Associations, grading Fixers, Offices, requests, and hazards in real time, while also authorizing Offices and Fixer licenses.[1][3][4] As such, most Fixer and Association business first passes through the Hana Association. Outside of select regulations set by the Hana, the Associations are given the freedom to choose how they operate, and as such differ greatly in niche, rules, uniform, and approach to combat.
Structure
The City's Districts are divided into four directional regions: the northern, eastern, western, and southern quarters. Each Association is then divided into four branches according to the quarter of the City its Fixers operate in: these are known as the North, East, West, and South branches. While certain fundamentals remain consistent throughout an Association's four branches, many things differ between them. Notably, the same Association may make use of different uniforms, weapons, traditions, and battle techniques across branches.[5] The climate, for example, is one major factor in a branch's choice of clothing.[6]
Within a branch, Associations are further divided into Sections. Each branch has six Sections, Section 1 being the most prestigious, well paid, and competently-staffed, and Section 6 being the least.[7] Fixers of the lower-numbered Sections, having worked their way there through promotions, receive better pay and treatment compared to the others.[7]
Each Association is led by a President,[8], each branch by a Branch Manager,[9] and each Section by a Director.
List of Known Associations
Each named Association has thus far been elaborated on with varying levels of detail, with the exception of the Eight Association. The twelfth of the Associations has yet to be mentioned altogether.
| Association | Specialization | Description |
|---|---|---|
Hana Association |
Head of the Associations, overseeing the system of Fixers and Offices. | The Hana is in charge of managing the other Associations, and Fixers as a whole. This includes issuing Fixer licenses, Color titles, and manages the grading system for Fixers and Offices by assessing their performance on the various Fixer requests they take.[10] The Association also deals with grading hazards, with the exception of Impurities of the City.[10] |
Zwei Association |
Civil protection and peacekeeping as a "shield" for clients. | Zwei missions include a variety of safety-oriented tasks, such as covert supervision, rescue operations, and dominion protection. They are a defense-oriented Association, tasked specifically with protecting clients rather than winning battles.[11] Members of Zwei's southern branch focus on stealthily supervising their clients in order to jump in during times of need, while the western branch prefers to stand by their clients and use their presence to dissuade potential threats.[12] |
| Managing Workshops and everything they produce.[13] | The Tres Association deals with all things Workshop, including reviewing weapons, charging taxes for them, and filing applications to the Head.[13] It is illegal to use Workshop gear not approved by the Tres.[13] | |
Shi Association |
Assassinating targets. | The Shi Association specializes in covert assassination. Its members believe in equality in death, and will take on any request with impartiality, regardless of the target or their crimes.[14] Unlike the other Associations, the Shi work in small numbers.[15] Given the nature of their work, there is also an emphasis on client confidentiality.[15] |
Cinq Association |
Duels and close combat, substituting into one-on-one fights in place of clients. | The Cinq Association concerns itself with contracted dueling under unique rules and etiquette. A hired Cinq Fixer's goal is to defeat their opponent in a duel and then either bring them to their knees or execute them.[16] Fixers of the southern branch declare duels by throwing one of their gloves at their dueling partner, while those of the eastern branch start by stating their name and affiliation.[17] There are also multiple "levels" of dueling that stipulate the duel end at different points.[18]
Due to the infrequent number of jobs they receive, they are also in charge of holding joint conferences and events with the other Associations.[19] |
Liu Association |
Large scale, open combat in the form of all-out war. |
The Liu Association consists of spirited warriors equipped to deal with multiple foes at once.[20] Its members make use of flame-wreathed weaponry, as the spread of fire proves useful in their form of combat.[21] The Association deals with a simple form of fighting that prioritizes vigor,[22] cooperation, and avoiding hopeless battles,[23] and doesn't concern itself much with strategy.[24] The Liu are known to have more tightly-knit bonds than other Associations; purposefully appointing mood-makers as Directors,[25] and with members that tend to spend time off together.[26][27] |
Seven Association |
Investigation and intelligence work regarding City affairs. | The Seven Association works to stay up-to-date on all matters of the City, gathering intelligence and holding the knowledge close.[28] The Association's Fixers deal with investigating, solving, and concluding cases, alongside writing reports on their work.[29] They can also be hired for "post-contract management", which involves punishing the individuals the Seven Association discovered were responsible for a case.[30] |
| N/A | N/A | |
Devyat' Association |
Delivery of rare or expensive items to any place in the world on tight deadlines.[31] | Devyat' Fixers make use of Poludnitsa trunks, or simple AI Courier Trunks that assist with storage and navigation. The trunks work by sending its stored objects into another dimension,[32] allowing them and the Association members to carry items significantly bigger or heavier than is physically possible.[33] As a member of the Devyat', an individual's main priority is always to deliver their expected packages on time. The Courier Trunk will enhance the user's power as a delivery deadline nears, until they either manage to deliver their package or are killed by the trunk's overflowing energy. |
Dieci Association |
The accumulation of knowledge, as well as contracts involving Relics and the Ruins.[34] | Members of the Dieci Association dedicate themselves to their studies, building knowledge to be converted into physical strength in combat.[35] The Fixers are known as either Fists or Keys depending on their weapon of choice, which possess their own drawbacks and advantages. Burning knowledge in battle will deplete the information from the fighter's mind, as such, Dieci members engage in late-night study sessions that double as review for lost knowledge and an opportunity to learn new material.[36]
Each cardinal branch of the Dieci Association has a "Saint", known to be exceptionally wise individuals which hold onto the Association's Holy Relics of the Ruins.[37] Also known as the “Association of Charity” for its commitment to taking in and raising orphaned children.[38] |
Öufi Association |
Mediating and observing deals amongst other factions, ensuring clients see their contractual obligations through. | The Öufi act as hired legal enforcement, using any means necessary to see that clients fulfill their ends of a contract. This includes dealing with those who do not comply to the terms and conditions and those who obstruct the legal process. When the time comes to reprimand rule breakers according to a contract's clauses, Öufi Fixers do not hesitate to use violence, including execution and amputation.[39] |
Trivia
- The Associations take their names from the numbers 1 through 12 in multiple different languages; those numbers and languages matching the designations and authorial nationalities of each of the Sinners, the order coinciding with their assigned Sinner number.
- 1 - ‘Hana’ (Korean: 하나, “one”)
- 2 - ‘Zwei’ (German: “two”). In reference to this, South Section 2 and 4 of the Zwei Association both use zweihanders (two-hander), long German swords meant to be wielded with two hands.
- 3 - ‘Tres’ (Spanish: “three”)
- 4 - ‘Shi’ (Japanese: “four”). The Japanese word for ‘four’, or ‘shi’ (四), is homophonous with the Japanese word for ‘death’ (死, shi). This is true among other East Asian languages, with the death association and tetraphobia referenced through the assassination niche of the Shi Association.
- 5 - ‘Cinq’ (French: “five”)
- 6 - ‘Liu’ (Chinese: “six”)
- 7 - ‘Seven’ (British English)
- 8 - ‘Eight’ (American English). The English language possesses no real difference in spelling or pronunciation between different dialects, resulting in the Seven and Eight Associations relying on aesthetic (as well as Ishmael and Heathcliff's speech patterns) to represent their respective British and American English origins.
- 9 - ‘Devyat'’ (Russian: девять, “nine”)
- 10 - ‘Dieci’ (Italian: “ten”). The Dieci Association represents their logo as the Roman numeral for 10, ‘X. The letter ‘X’ is often an informal shorthand for Christ, as an orthographic borrowing of ‘chi’ (Χ), from Χριστός (Khristós, “Christ”), connecting to the religious inspirations of Dieci Association.
- 11 - ‘Öufi’ (Swiss German: “eleven”). Likely because Hermann Hesse, the author of Demian, was of German-Swiss citizenship, the Öufi Association's name is taken from the number eleven in the Swiss dialect of German, which is distinct from the German word, ‘elf’.
- Following this naming scheme, it can be presumed that the 12th and final Association would be named the ‘Dodeka’ (Ancient Greek: δώδεκα, “twelve”) Association—corresponding with Ancient Greek poet, Homer.
- In the scrapped ending of Library of Ruina, the Purple Tear proposes the formation of a 13th Association consisting of E.G.O users known as “EGOISTS”. While this scene was removed from the game and presumably non-canon, said new branch might have been named either ‘Sh'losh esre ’(Hebrew: שלוש עשרה), ‘Třináct’ (Czech), or ‘Draytsn’ (Yiddish: דרײַצן), considering Franz Kafka's national and ethnic backgrounds.
- According to Caiman in Intervallo III: Yield My Flesh to Claim Their Bones, a new Association specializing in Distortions is rumored to be in the works.
